Travelling to the USA on a visa waiver (ESTA)?

Homeland Security are now looking to gain access to the last five years of social media activity to check you're not a threat to national security.

Not that I have any intention of ever going to the USA again, but this would stop me in my tracks... and for the US hoping to see an influx of visitors for the football world cup, this may have a chilling effect on any tourism bonus expected.

    One more threat to privacy!

Drawing together two themes from recent discussions in my timeline, its worth re-emphasising that:

In-work & housing benefits are not (in the last instance) policies that help the poor rather they are a mechanism to funnel state fund into supporting profits for low-wage employers, and landlords (whose rents are higher than they would be without housing & other benefits being paid to the poor).

So when people talk about 'benefits cheats' you might want to point this out...

I have noted from time to time that my broadband service is provided by a community broadband initiative called Broadband for the Rural North (B4RN); Full disclosure: early on I was on the management committee.

If you're interested in how B4RN delivered world class broadband to a rural community over a decade ago, there is now a massive on-line book of history & implementation tips for you to have a look at.

    Headline: we did it ourselves!

Perhaps unsurprisingly, in light of the increase in US application fees for the H-1B visa, for highly skilled immigrants (used extensively by Big Tech), the UK Govt. is assessing the value of dropping application fees altogether for high skill workers visa in the UK.

It makes perfect sense & perhaps may encourage the Govt. to shift the debate about migration away from 'small boats' and towards the economic benefits of migrants going in the UK workforce?
