There are many reasons why people move to @Vivaldi. Jack Wallen tells you why he switched in this article on ZDNET.The point is really that you can make Vivaldi be what you want it to be. We respect that people have different opinions on how the browser should look and feel and thus we provide the flexibility for you to get it your way. You can have a rich UI or you can hide it. No other browser has the level of functionality that we offer, but similarly you can make Vivaldi the most minimal browser as well.We listen to users both with respect to the things we add, but also what we do not add. Vivaldi is not an ad busines, like most of our competitors. We do not push AI. We do not push Crypto. If you have not moved it our way, maybe it is time to give us a try?#ZDNET #Linux #WIndows #MacOS #Browser #Vivaldi #Technology #Computer https://www.zdnet.com/home-and-office/work-life/what-made-me-finally-switch-to-vivaldi-as-my-default-linux-web-browser/

More and more are realizing that it was a really bad idea to entrust all data to Big Tech. Given that, what do you do now?For many it just means moving to a different hosting service, that is not Big Tech. For others it means hosting yourself. Likely there will be a bit of a combination for many. In any case, this means the need to build up competence in the organization, which IMHO is a good thing. In my old company, Opera, and in my new one @Vivaldi, we always run things that way. Our servers have always been our servers. We may choose to use some external services, but mostly we use our own. Our Vivaldi servers are in Iceland. At Opera, we built significant server farms across the world, including in Iceland, not least for the Opera Mini service. The server farms we built at Opera handled hundreds of millions of users on a monthly basis. The Opera Mini service had billions of daily page views going through it.When some are saying that there is not enough competence to move away from Big Tech, that is really nonsense. It can take time to do so, as with any migration and it may require different thinking, but it is mostly a question of will.#Technology #BigTech #SelfHosting #Vivaldi #Browser #EU #Europa

@drewph @dallo literally the same companies already got investigated as being a memory cartel 20 years ago, found true, and no one went to prison, some of the same execs still work there (with big raises of course) and Micron got a free pass.

@Boosh22 @Vivaldi Here is the thing. Chromium is also based on another browser core in Webkit and Webkit in turn was based on khtml. That is how open source works at times.I have built a browser from scratch. I did that at Opera. There is a reason why nobody has done that for more than 25 years. It is just not trivial to do. If it was, Apple, Google and Microsoft would have made a browser from scratch instead of building on code made by others.A strong Vivaldi can influence what Chromium becomes. If you support us, we will do our best to influence the Web to become better, like we have always done.

The general consensus at the time was that cloning was too dangerous/problematic/scary to become a mainstream technology. A combination of laws, policy, and business pressure greatly slowed research into cloning humans. There have been a couple of interesting developments in the area over the last 30 years, but the technology has largely been dormant in our everyday lives.

@jon @Ketakater @Vivaldi it's a bit of a chicken-and-egg problem though. JPEG XL for example is starting to see some traction thanks to Apple decided to support it anyway and the availability of extensions for Chrome and Firefox to handle it, and now Firefox is finally looking into adding it in main (not just in nightly behind a default-off flag). Also, since you don't report Vivaldi as such anymore IIRC, how are you going to show that more people are indeed using it?

@koen_hufkens It's this all over again: http://coding2learn.org/blog/2013/07/29/kids-cant-use-computers/Look, we've had the Raspberry Pi revolution since then. We may not be in great shape but self hosting and homelabs are a thing, for those that want to step into the wilderness there's plenty of opportunity to do so.
