The rich can borrow money against assets with unrealized gains at rates like the common person gets as a pitiful savings account interest. (Essentially zero)The common person also has to pay taxes on unrealized gains (property tax)

@codinghorror I have a friend that worked at NASA Goddard got me in for a tour...in a bunny suit, in the labs. I got to hold part of one of the magnetometers for the MMS mission https://mms.gsfc.nasa.gov/ - the cover. It was a small hemisphere of none-more-black material that really, really was none more black. It felt like looking at a glitch in the world, the curvature of the thing was only really visible side on because looking straight at it it was just...black. I couldn't get a photograph of it to make sense.
