I've reviewed vibe coded code and I've reviewed code written by a senior engineer following a similar process to @mttaggart. The code for the vibe-coded software was abysmal. It mostly didn't work.But an engineer following a solid process even with safeguards still came up with pretty bad code. It was wordy to the extreme and it didn't have near enough abstraction. The code it created functioned but it was unmaintainable. PR reviews took legit three times as long.It's fantastic at generating a lot of code but generating code is not the only cost in software.

@Gnuxie @theotheroracle Oh I'm not saying they're doing that in terms of the infrastructure of the the vibecoded slopware they are bragging about in their blogposts being something they support or that gets them there.The goal of that stuff is not to be software that is used.The goal of it is for people to switch to using Cloudflare as a *host*, not just middleware, and to be convinced that Cloudflare's infrastructure should be relied upon to the degree that they get bought in, in the way people rely on AWS

But if you don’t want to, skip down to where he takes up the ethics and humanities issues. Very deep and very intense stuff there. #genai

@repepo @minaskar Thanks for posting this article. Some things jumped out at me:* Relying on a LLM to do one's thinking affects one's ability to think. An obvious historical analogy is memorizing multiplication tables vs. depending on a calculator.* The failure modes described (e.g. confabulation & sycophancy) are growing pains of this immature technology. For example, we find that using a disciplined & role-separated multi-LLM array operating at the criticality point for context management eliminates confabulation.* An LLM can hold more in context than can any human mind, allowing for manipulation of domains that would otherwise be impossible to engage with. I make no value judgement about this capacity, only note its existence.

@mirth @MichaelTBacon @cwebber I think some press person estimated the ai companies costs were 10x their revenue. I don't remember which one though.Its plausible theres improvements in both inference and training though.I don't know how much progress there is on model collapse though.And this does nothing about the feeling that the reason companies push AI is to make workers fear for their jobs and block unionization efforts. Also I think the main goal of current AI alignment is to make the AIs obedient to billionaires so they can have obedient secret police for their future kingdoms.
