Yesterday’s Ford Capri had a ‘Cologne’ V6 engine under its bonnet. Today’s Capri is built at Ford’s main German plant in Cologne and has an electric motor nestling between its rear wheels. It is based on Volkswagen’s MEB EV platform. The new Capri is a decent car but a slow seller. Borgward went bust in 1961 but there is a happy ending to the story.Borgward went bust in 1961 but there is a happy ending to the story. The factory in Bremen was acquired by the van-maker Hanomag, later Hanomag-Henschel. This was later taken over by Mercedes, which produced its popular T1 van there. In 1978, passenger car production returned to the site with the S123 ‘T’ estate models based on the W123. I saw this 1.3 million km example at Techno Classica Essen in 2013. Tough cars.
