Our Haskell folks managed to create enormous amount of tech debt. -
The data isn't "deleted" if it's possible to "undelete" it πEven 25 years ago, just "zero" a drive was not considered enough. It would still be possible to recover data through. That's why the military wiping standards at that time required at least 7 cycles of 0x00, 0xff and random data. And then preferably demagnetising the drive.
Later demagnetising equipment became even stronger and got certified for top secret data handling, so just sending the drive through those devices was considered good enough.
All of this was for magnetic storage medium. SSDs and non-volatile storage modules is a completely different beast to tackle.
Deleting data is hard. It's like trying forgetting something you've seen or heard. Computers doesn't make this task easier.
