One may notice a certain dissonance:One may notice a certain dissonance:
"Interviews are insanely hard for no reason and involve questions you will not be answering in your job"
And: "most stuff is designed on vibes by people who don't know what they're doing."
The answer is: nepotism. A lot of people get jobs through nepotism. Someone "recommended" them, which is to say, they were hired because someone knew them. They skipped the queue. They didn't do the bullshit grind you did. And if you've ever aced an interview and still didn't get hired? There's a pretty good chance that's what happened to you.

Electronics engineering interviews: "Design a bandgap reference.Apologies if I gave you PTSD flashbacks from hearing the word "Laplace."
-
Electronics engineering interviews: "Design a bandgap reference."Please put Maxwell's equations for us on the whiteboard"
When everyone, EVERYONE, fucking just remembers them once, and then never touches them the fuck again and has trauma from merely hearing the word "Laplace."

You think software documentation is bad?You think software documentation is bad? Try a datasheet.
"Keep copper away from the SW node."
How far? Doesn't say.
"ΞΈJA measured on JEDEC standard board." A mystical lab-produced artifact with four layers, 0.2mm drills, and impeccable impedance. Real boards? Get bent.
"For the value of R1, see Equation 7.
Equation 7: R1 = (VREF / ISET)"
Then you realise VREF isn't in the electrical characteristics table, and ISET depends on temperature. You go looking and find them buried in something that says:
"Assumes typical silicon, see Figure 69."
Figure 69: "Measured with Rcomp = 12.7 kOhm."
Where did Rcomp come from? Oh, AN1337, an app note from 2009 scanned from a fax.
That app note? "Assumes a standard four-layer PCB with 1 oz copper." What does that mean? Copper where? Good luck figuring it out.

Electronics engineering interviews: "Design a bandgap reference.Electronics engineering interviews: "Design a bandgap reference. On the whiteboard. No datasheets. Now do an op-amp."
Actual datasheets: "we assume you have the smoothest brain of any engineer ever, as our experience has shown this to be the lowest common denominator in this industry."

If I had a do-over in school, I'd probably pursue a psych degree instead. In high school the placement tests they had me take recommended economist, which is hilarious, because I hate maths except as a tool, and I think most economists are a bunch of people purporting to be oracles but know nothing. The ones who reliably predict recessions are never listened to by anyone except after, then ignored forever after except for a one-off Cassandra article.
The ones who aren't Capitalist are doubly ignored, even by other leftists, because nobody wants to hear about how to make the numbers work, they just care that Capitalism Badβ’.
"Resource allocation? Actually implementing a fair society? Making a society that doesn't fold in on itself because nobody wants to clean the sewer? That shit is BORING. Let's burn a cop car."

Been thinking about moving to Bremerton.also lol I've been to basically every place in that music video except the high school (been a long time since I went to high school)

Been thinking about moving to Bremerton.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKtB1Oij-Eg
a classic
also I love how they made a bunch of Christian stuff later than later disowned it all saying it was a childish phase
Also, the streetcar in that video has been torn out for years, though some of the tracks are still in Pioneer Square. RIP.
But that ferry is very much real! Although that sign on the ferry terminal has changed. They redid it some years ago.

My nuts won't go onto my cam lock easily.I just realised my phrasing is bad but I don't care also.

My nuts won't go onto my cam lock easily. My nuts won't go onto my cam lock easily. I put in a tolerance of 0.2. Maybe I need like 0.4.

Been thinking about moving to Bremerton.Itβs also much simpler to get to where I wanna go, like the store. Everything is just easier to get to.
-
Been thinking about moving to Bremerton.I like that side of the sound, itβs much more honest in general imo (less techbros), much quieter, much cheaper, sure my transit options are more limited but it exists. And if I wanna come to Seattle I get on a boat.

Reminder: Cory Doctorow isn't worth listening to.@lina Bans on reverse engineering have not stopped Chinese companies from reverse engineering western products and making worse cut-down versions of them, often to disastrous results. Like deaths, injuries, destroyed property, burnt down housesβ¦

Sometimes friendships end just by attrition. The main things I've learned are:
* Trust your gut
* If something feels off in your friendship, don't dismiss it out of hand
* If someone expects unconditional support but offers little to none in return, that's a red flag
* Don't let someone suck up all your energy just because they lack any means of internal support
* Speak up about your needs, and if you get shot down, that's a red flag -
Sometimes friendships end just by attrition. She should have actually gotten real help. She was told to. She should have done a lot of things. I should have too. But blame isn't productive. It's so tempting.
What's really productive, is asking myself, how can I strengthen what I have, and how can I apply the lessons I've learned going forward?
