Why?
In E01 of S02, Charlie mentions how Pi shows up in all kinds of places, & we don't know why. So why not incorporate some of these digits here?
How?
The 3 instruments are each playing on their own MIDI channel (3, 1, 4) and start their sequence on beats 3, 1 and 4 (out of 8 - I'm really using a 4/4 signature, but running clock at 160 to 245bpm, double speed, hence as if it was 8/4).
The classic Roland TR909 (in form of the Behringer RD9 Rhythm Designer clone) not only drove the percussions, but was also played as a live instrument.
Only 2 basic patterns were programmed and all variations through the length of the recording are done by adding / removing certain beats, muting/unmuting parts and controlling the volume.
There is something about telephony that is inherently tied to electronic music (if for nothing else, due to Kraftwerk). Specifically I used some sounds that are typical of the telephone system, such as a POTS ringtone marking the first beat of each bar. And as you listen, you'll find the intro and ending also fully embrace the theme (and there's clearly a clin d'oeil to #kraftwerk )

While I could say I am making a judgment call on this one, I'm focusing solely on "Call", as in telephone.
