@indigoparadox I thought that "gaslighting" had to be saying things that makes another person feel upset because they don't think they can trust their own senses anymore. Doing it to make them feel helps and a little crazy.

It was pretty clear this possibility had never occurred to him before. Then he said something that didn't address my question, and moved on.

@futurebird @c9a JavaScript can be server-side with nodejs or bun or deno. I generally don't like JavaScript on the backend but it has the benefit of being the same language on the frontend and backend. PHP is still a reasonable option, and it runs easily on cheap shared hosts. There are better backend service language options (I prefer Go) but JavaScript or PHP is entirely defensible for students just learning how to do things on the web. Python is another good teaching option.

@futurebird Don't laugh too hard. I wouldn't put it past Zuckerberg to integrate "nudification AI" features into his glasses. Every time another INCEL looks at a woman it consumes enough energy to power a home for a month.

@futurebird Also, I tell junior devs to think back to science class. Every change you make to code is an experiment; your hypothesis is that the new code will be somehow better than the old. But you can't put too many variables in an experiment, or you won't know which changes mattered and why.So test often. Test after every line of code if you have to. It sounds annoying but it's much easier than the avalanche of bugs you get when running 1000 new lines the first time. Go slow to go fast.

@futurebird Google Maps is the hardest to avoid by far, in the meantime I contribute to OSM hoping to be, at some point, good enough to replace it.

@futurebird Not sure if this applies, but some new fabric has sizing in it that has an odor that repels some cats and dogs. It could be that washing once or twice would be enough to eliminate the smell.

@dwillanski I kind of live for those moments where it feels like the edges of reality are peeling back a bit... when, however fleeting it seems like something really strange could be real. I guess a lot of people do. But, the nonsense ratio is so off the charts the magic isn't there anymore.

@futurebird Actual forensic geology is things like "That was an earthquake, not a bomb."But I suspect that was the infamous pseudoscientist Scott Wolter, who pretends to be a forensic geologist with a masters from the University of Minnesota.Wolter never got such a degree, nor does the U offer one. He did a general geology undergrad degree and played college football.
