@sidereal @futurebird TBH “int()” is not a mathematical function. Mathematics has floor, ceiling, and truncation, which are unambiguous. The problem here is computer scientists and engineers. Some of them have taken int() to mean the integer part as originally used by Legendre (which is, the floor), while others have chosen to use the truncation instead. (And then Excel that IIRC has it all wrong.)

Sometimes people ask questions because they just want to talk to someone. I want to suggest that this is important and something we should make space for. I think that's also why there is a lot of nostalgia and love for "shitposting" ... it's just pure human interaction without a lot of judgement. And it would be horrible if we let the LLMs take it from us, right?Right?

On the other extreme you have advice about "serious art collections" where people have paintings worth thousands of dollars. Some of my art is worth thousands of dollars TO ME. I need to talk about this in the coop meetings so they don't replace it. Just stand up and do a poem about how much I love the floor and how sad I'd be if it were gone. They "updated" our lobby and it's... it's fine, the floor wasn't level and it was time. But, I'd rather they spend more on other things and not mess with the halls.

I like to talk to my husband now and then. And we can lean over to see each other's screens. How do you set up your "office?"

Anyone else kind of hate days off if only because it ruins the schedule?I want days off. I need days off. But I also get so stressed out when school goes on break. I tried to explain this to another teacher and I think they reported me to HR for being unwell.

This is an interesting development in home security for New York City. In the 1980s having your stereo or television stolen from your apartment was a more common crime. The idea of someone breaking into a house to steal electronics today seems ludicrous. (Nonetheless my mom *still* asks if my apartment is secure enough because I have “all those electronics”)Frankly, it seems more likely someone would break in to take a shower and have a nap: a hotel costs more than electronics.

@GustavinoBevilacqua @futurebird Most of them have a 360 degree camera system now. It's got cameras in the grill, tailgate and side-view mirrors and shows everything around the vehicle. Especially handy for connecting trailers.The system turns on automatically once put into reverse, but there's also a button to turn it on as needed at low speed.

For many people programs are immutable. They just are the way that they are. Thinking about a computer program or search engine as something that you could shape or change to suit your purposes isn’t what our computer education teaches.People expect to work within the limits of the applications and software— not play a role in shaping its design.

@futurebird It's interesting the effect on my mental health since dropping all social media except the Fediverse. No alg trying to keep me angry to make me stay logged in longer. Fascinating, cause I'm still scrolling a huge amount of time... it's just not filled with every angering post it can find.
