@raymaccarthy @enriquericos I used to be the purchasing manager for an artist's materials firm. Letraset and other brands of dry transfer lettering were big business for us, even into the mid-1990s.

And I wouldn't say that's the only advantage to optical switches. There's a definite difference in feel, since they are switching a relay and not actually passing the main circuit's signal.

@enriquericos @raymaccarthy My actual educational background is in Theatre Design, and that includes prop design (which includes building custom things and making them look old and worn).

The button caps are likely custom made and affixed to modern switches, although it would not at all surprise me if they are vintage commercial pieces. There's a lot of surplus vintage electronics out there in the world, and you'd only need a small number for a television or film production.

@enriquericos @raymaccarthy I was not suggesting the switches in the photo are optical switches. There are literally thousands of different kinds of similar switches.

I'm simply saying that if you want to build a thing, optical switches are one type of switch that is available, that they are pretty cool, and that they might do what you want them to do better than mechanical switches.

@enriquericos They look like standard pushbutton switches, to me, but I'm a musician, so I have tons of them on effects pedals.

I would suggest taking a look at the "OptoKick" optical switches from TheGigRig. I know they supply them to other manufacturers.

@Teaceratops Take a boat. Might have to learn sailing, first. Heh-heh. There are freighter companies who accept passengers. It's rather a nice way to travel, although obviously berths are limited.

' PayPal does not want you seeing this video. A few hours ago, PayPal's lawyer sent me a cease and desist letter and requested Patreon take down my video under a copyright infringement claim. I consider this a direct attack against my
fundamental rights as an independent journalist.

If PayPal thought this would stop me, they were sorely mistaken. '

  • After 7 years here I still don’t intuitively grasp non-metric units so everything I buy is either way too much, or the opposite.
    gcvsa@mstdn.plusundefined gcvsa@mstdn.plus

@skinnylatte FTR, we do not use Imperial units in the US and we never have. Imperial units are a UK standard that developed decades after the US became independent.

What we use in the US are called "US customary units", and while they have a common ancestor with UK Imperial units in medieval British units, there are significant differences, and the two should not be confused.
