  • Are Western Digital drives trustworthy these days.
    gnomon@mastodon.socialundefined gnomon@mastodon.social

@mhoye @mcc you'll get better value for money by buying an internal 3.5" WD mechanical drive and a cheap dock, but that USB drive is fine. Nothing wrong with it.

  • Instead of using git as a database, what if you used database as a git?
    gnomon@mastodon.socialundefined gnomon@mastodon.social

@andrewnez @stsp ah, here we go:

    https://web.archive.org/web/20160304015546/http://blog.deveo.com/your-git-repository-in-a-database-pluggable-backends-in-libgit2/

    And

    https://github.com/libgit2/libgit2-backends/pull/4#issuecomment-36115322

2013 and 2014 respectively. (And upon re-reading it I see that libgit2 has several SQL pluggable back-ends, so now I'm sure you've already seen this. Sorry for pointing out the obvious.)

  • Instead of using git as a database, what if you used database as a git?
    gnomon@mastodon.socialundefined gnomon@mastodon.social

@andrewnez @stsp wasn't this done a few years back? I think maybe by AWS? They also leaned on libgit2 to interpose a SQL storage layer into git operations. They ran across the same storage size trade-offs of lacking delta-pack optimisations, but if I recall correctly their big lesson learned was that standard CLI git operations slowed down by a few thousand times because of an unexpectedly high number of round trips to the database.

Is this ringing any bells? I'll see if I can find it.

  • Agentic AI-based services are the new Shadow IT.
    gnomon@mastodon.socialundefined gnomon@mastodon.social

@briankrebs @hacks4pancakes (maybe I'm drawing too fine a distinction here, splitting a hair that doesn't need splitting, or maybe I'm preaching to the choir. Sorry if I'm doing either.)

  • Agentic AI-based services are the new Shadow IT.
    gnomon@mastodon.socialundefined gnomon@mastodon.social

@briankrebs @hacks4pancakes the difference I think I see isn't the "best intentions" part, it's the duty of responsibility. Shadow IT is not run by professionals *in that domain*, but the folks most vocally pushing agentic tools are experts. They should be expected to wield the power of their implementations & their influence on organizations and our industry with foresight, caution, and care.

I have more sympathy for accidental damage from Shadow IT than careless damage from trusted experts.

  • Agentic AI-based services are the new Shadow IT.
    gnomon@mastodon.socialundefined gnomon@mastodon.social

@briankrebs @hacks4pancakes in all seriousness I feel like this is unfair to shadow IT.

Most shadow IT exists due to (perceived) necessity and a (perceived) inability to tap into necessary services through existing org structures. It's usually built with good intentions to solve real problems by people whose job does not include knowing better.

Agentic AI-based services are almost all being built by people whose job *does* include knowing better. They should.

    gnomon@mastodon.socialundefined gnomon@mastodon.social

@vga256 @jsstaedtler just be aware that specifying numeric UTC offsets is not quite the same thing as named offsets *because the definition of where and when those named offsets apply changes over time*.

    gnomon@mastodon.socialundefined gnomon@mastodon.social

@mhoye @gvwilson (for the cheap LED flashlight, consider an Emisar D2 single-channel with an Eneloop or IKEA LADDA AA cell in it: it's a right angle flashlight with a magnet in the tailcap which makes it very convenient to point at work in a dark, tight space. https://mastodon.social/@gnomon/115761837676418073 / https://mastodon.social/@gnomon/115827794883007741 )

@mhoye I put a tiny little click-coupler on both of my thin liner gloves, eliminating the annoyance that would crop up every few weeks of discovering I'd grabbed only one of the two gloves on my way out of the house.

edit: oo, and a shoehorn long enough to use while standing up straight. The length makes using it easier after having put on two layers of outerwear, plus gloves.

    > That is where system administration becomes a communal craft. In fact it always has been.

One hundred percent. The whole point of being a sysadmin is leaning on the people in your community to support people in other communities *so they can use machines to do things more difficult than they can manage unaided*.

    The. Whole. Point.

LLMs as they currently exist replace freely-offered support with theft from those offering that support.
