If you're running a manually installed server and have access to modify files, this is apparently how to do it:

EDIT: Thanks for all the info in replies! I've changed the link to a more complete alternative article on all the changes needed.
(Thank you to @kaveinthran for pointing out the original article and @b2c for pointing out the alternative article.)

Mastodon server admins, important news! That's true at the moment, yes.
From reading between the lines on the responses by Mastodon's official accounts in the discussions on this, the requirements are not necessarily set in stone, especially on things that already allow listing in the main index like forked software and registration requests.

Mastodon server admins, important news!p.s. The complete thread from the developers at https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/115989801184595302 has even more info about this initiative:

Mastodon server admins, important news!It will, but getting them to step away from recommending mastodon.social is a massive step in the right direction.
Also they do leave the door open for forked software instances. The exact wording they use on their criteria list is:
"Run default Mastodon (for now)"
Also also, this is just about the default instances recommended up front, they would still have the complete listing behind that which does already include Glitch etc instances.
-
Mastodon server admins, important news!Indeed! And it's a really clever solution they've come up with, it solves two problems at once by prioritising servers in the user's own language or location and encouraging decentralisation that way.

Mastodon server admins, important news!Mastodon server admins, important news!
The Mastodon developers are going to stop suggesting mastodon.social as a "default server".
Instead, the "default" server suggestions are going to be ones for a user's language and/or geographical location.
If your server matches these:
- General public server
- Running vanilla Mastodon
- Mastodon Covenant compliant
- Have existed for 1+ year
- Have shut-down & disaster plans...then see this post for details: https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/115989802617165343

If you run your own Mastodon server, it's really easy to add custom emoji to make it personalised. If you run your own Mastodon server, it's really easy to add custom emoji to make it personalised. Here's a guide for admins on how to do it:
People on other servers can see your custom emoji, but only you can use them (unless the other server adds the same custom emoji).
You can also clone emoji from other servers, and also block emoji if you see something unsuitable.

This article by @parisba is why #CommunityHosting and #SelfHosting need to be normalised. This article by @parisba is why #CommunityHosting and #SelfHosting need to be normalised. They are the only way we can stop scenarios like this happening:
You might think this couldn't happen to you, but it could happen to anyone. It's especially scary as most big tech companies are in repressive countries.
It's much easier and cheaper than you think to make your own online services. I've done a guide for non-technical people at https://growyourown.services

Hey people who run their own PeerTube servers 👋Hey people who run their own PeerTube servers 👋
There is a little-publicised feature in PeerTube which lets servers subscribe to a shared "allowlist" of good servers to federate with. (You can also manually federate with additional servers that aren't on the list.)
Would there be any interest in setting up such a shared list so that PeerTube admins can easily find other nice/safe servers to federate with?

It's surprisingly easy to create your own private music streaming service for all your devices. It's surprisingly easy to create your own private music streaming service for all your devices. I did a short review and tutorial for one based on Nextcloud's "Music" app:
In brief, you install Music on your Nextcloud, then install a compatible app on your phone or tablet, and your music collection becomes a streaming service you can listen to anywhere.
You can also share this streaming service with other users on your Nextcloud.

Most public Fediverse servers are running on professional hosting services using business-grade data centres. Most public Fediverse servers are running on professional hosting services using business-grade data centres. They are owned and controlled by grassroots admins, but they are on the same kind of hardware as commercial online services.
For some reason there's a misconception floating around that all Fediverse servers run on home machines in a corner of someone's living room. This usually isn't the case. It is possible to do, but most admins don't do this, especially not for public servers.
