  • Yesterday Cory Doctorow argued that refusal to use LLMs was mere "neoliberal purity culture".

And likewise, don't mistake "mainstream thinking" or what "most of the industry is doing" with "reality" or even "best practice." Agile, Lean, and Total Quality Management, and practically about every other significant improvement is a break from "the usual way of doing things." Improvement is a change from the mediocre.

"Appeal to Popularity" (as a signal of truth) is literally a well documented Logical Fallacy:

Don't mistake a hugely popular fad or bubble for "reality." And if you don't believe that "[nearly] everybody believes" can be quite detached from punishingly harsh reality, then you need to read about the "Tulip Mania" craze and bubble:

Yes. In reality I'm well aware that my opinions and even wording of text responses are both generally recognizable.

But honestly, I don't much care. I'd be glad to give them my honest opinion, face-to-face. That they feel the need to make responses safe tells me that they *know* that they're running an "unsafe" work environment. And I'd be glad to tell them that too. 😈

(They'll deny it all of course. And I'm not saying that they'd actually be lying. 🙄 )

Technically, showing exactly the posts and boosts of those you've followed, in chronological order, with no filtering, adjustments, or heuristics *is an algorithm.*

Even when it is *not* the kind of "algorithm" used and criticized by the mainstream sites we criticize.

Our words are often ambiguous. We often need to clarify what *we mean* by them.

    …

And hey; I appreciate your good work!

    I think many do. 💕

The TSA has not actually been able to present any compelling evidence that they have prevented any terrorist attacks. All they can conclusively show is that they have taken a great many things from travelers, most of which are demonstrably harmless. They also routinely fail their own tests -- missing weapons hidden in luggage that they are supposed to be stopping.

It is theoretically possible for them to do a much better job. But not likely, regardless of budget.
