@gnaddrig @ericgjovaag It's a play on Dolly Parton's hit song "Working 9 to 5." In saying 9/25, the "2" sounds like the "to" in 9 to 5.

@tgent_fens @ericgjovaag Out of curiosity, and I think either system of dating is fine, but how do you express your birthday in conversation? Do you say, for instance, "My birthday is on the 25th of September," or do you say "My birthday is September 25th." I think this mm/dd/yyyy format was born out of this colloquial speech. Now, in German, numbers are expressed the long way: Fünfundzwanzig. Whereas, in my country, we say twenty-five, leaving out conjunctions. Just a fascinating world of linguistics.
