I think I figured out why I have such a visceral reaction to these unannounced flyovers: residual post-9/11 PTSD.For several weeks after 9/11, fighter jets patrolled around and over NYC. I think it was supposed to make everyone feel safer, but it had the opposite effect (on me at least). As the air shook and the noise suddenly increased, you involuntarily ducked and then looked around for signs of explosions and rubble. Little moments of terror to punctuate the day.

Side note: A mile or two behind this shop is the (now inaccessible) abandoned ghost town of Drawbridge, CA, which is slowly sinking into the bay. But thats another story for another day.

King of UK, to his own brother: "That does it, you're not a prince any more. Out you go."US, now that Trump is clearly implicated: "Technically it's not really pedophilia if the girl is 14."The freaking *British royal family* is doing a better job cleaning house than we are.
What caught my eye here was the line of people at the door. Something about the way they were dressed felt timeless, like the photo could have been made at any point in the last 50 or 60 years.I'm not a street photographer, but this scene seemed worth a try. Fortunately, everything moved slowly enough to allow me time to set up my clunky tripod and gear.

I may be the last person to figure this out, but in case I'm not:My Mastodon browser tab started making an irregular, infrequent beeping sound a few weeks ago, despite my having turned off notification sounds literally years ago.Turns out the latest Mastodon version (which added quoting) also added a new category of notification sounds that's ON BY DEFAULT when you're quoted. There's a switch to disable it in the settings on the notifications tab. You're welcome.
Addendum: Hobo moniker tags are a rathole you can spend a lot of time going down. I recommend the somewhat obscure documentary "Who Is Bozo Texino", which I just noticed seems to be up on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSqMAADNKA8
I apologize if I’m a bit testy lately. I’m still getting swarmed by frenzied strangers who for some reason I can’t fathom are completely freaked out that I posted this without a content warning. https://federate.social/@mattblaze/115522873521993091

Also, whenI use the term “quality” here, I’m using it a strictly technical sense to refer to the fidelity of the image, not the aesthetic qualities of the image. I very much dislike this usage, but it’s fairly standard in discussing this stuff.
Jargon explanation: Obergefell was the case - decided just ten years ago - establishing the right to same-sex marriage. “Denied cert” means the Court declined to take the case.
@samuel @CaraBruar This weird notion that I'm personally obliged to protect people from reading something I might write that they might potentially find uninteresting or mildly disquieting is pretty offensive, frankly.Just fucking block me if you don't want to see my posts. 100% effective. Or don't, in which case, be aware that I might post something you don't expect or like sometimes. Your choice.
