The royal apartments in the palace are quite impressive, too. What I especially liked was that there were modern art works from the 1980s in almost all rooms. If I understood correctly, these are works ordered to commemorate the devastating earthquake here in 1980. One work per room, one work per artist. Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, Anselm Kiefer, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Robert Rauschenberg and more.

I was at the Reggia di Caserta, the former royal palace of the kings and queens of Naples and the Two Sicilies. Very impressive. I suspect it is a relatively unknown tourist target, sadly, at least outside Italy. Even though it likely is in the same class as Versailles, Schönbrunn, etc.

Classic selfie on the deck of the train ferry, with the Madonna della Lettera at the entrance to Messina harbour in the background. Vos et ipsam civitatem benedicimus = I bestow my benediction upon you and your city. I probably should visit Messina, too, for a longer time some day.

The best opportunity to get up close and personal with a train is on a train ferry.

(If you don’t count visiting a depot.)

Some day I want to stay a few days near the lovely Taormina Giardini station. The railway goes right along the beach here.

Once again the #Trenitalia ticket controller very carefully checks my €3 seat reservation (bought from ÖBB), and is not interested in checking that I actually have an #Interrail pass valid for travel today, in First Class. Hmm.

And yes, I know that the point with idiotic spam email is not to be believable to even 1% of recipients. It is enough if just a single recipient is enough of an idiot and believes it. Still, it is fun to laugh at such ludicrous attempts.

In fact, this claim has been used by Donald Trump to belittle and ridicule environmentalists and the fight against anthropogenic climate change, which he doesn't believe in. He wrote: "They ripped the hell out of the Rainforest of Brazil to build a four lane highway for Environmentalists to travel. It's become a big scandal!"

Damn, fact checks involving trivial mathematics seems hard. Even for journalists.

I bet you have all seen the alarmist and very viral-worthy claims that "Brazil cuts down tens of thousands of acres of rainforest to build a four-lane road for COP30".

Now, some articles also mention that the road is "more than 13 km" long. Let's be generous and say that it is 15 km. And let's say "tens of thousands" is actually just 15,000.

15,000 acres is 61 square kilometres.

For a 15 km long road to cover 61 square kilometres, how wide does it have to be? Four kilometres.

I rest my case.

(Note: Of course this doesn't mean that I would approve of large-scale destruction of the rain forest in general. But building 13 km of road, in a city with 1.4 million inhabitants, is not significant in the large scale of things.)

Apparently a 25% off #Interrail sale coming up next week. Should I? (Rhetorical question.)
