is dying, apparently:@elilla I will be so happy when Duolingo falls. While they could have made a somewhat useful vocabulary training app that would've worked alongside other strategies, even with the goofy-as-fuck sentences (oh yes, lesson one: La tua anatra e la mia cena... very helpful in any situation).
But it was also fucking obnoxious how it'd just be like "No, this isn't how these people speak." Even if you knew that a) that is how they spoke and b) that there was more than one way to write a sentence of the same meaning (dialect/geography, different word choice). So you constantly got punished for it in the gamified setting, including being forced to go in and debate people on why something should exist. (Around the time I stopped using it, I was constantly marked down on using 'Yeah' instead of 'Yes' when translating to English. Even though I rarely use 'yes', and they have the same meaning.) It really brought out both an internal language prescriptivism and the language prescriptivists in its userbase.
Like, if I wanted to go do courses that were forcing me into the already bullshit CEFR and the horrible class structures those lessons have, I could go do that... pretty much anywhere. I didn't need an app for that.

Wondering if people know how to handle this issue with #GoFundMe.Wondering if people know how to handle this issue with #GoFundMe. A GFM for my friend has had its transfers paused since December 23 (and currently has $1.2k just sitting on it). For a month, GFM promised that they were "working on verifying it."
It is now February 20, and they have not verified it and they will not respond to further inquiry. I don't like that they're basically holding money that is not theirs while pretending to "verify" the account (despite having been provided with every amount of information demanded in order for them to "verify" it).
So I either want to know how to push them to verify it and transfer the money (as they should) or refund the money to the people who paid it (because their money is certainly not being used as they intended it to — a corrupt nonprofit is keeping it rather than it being sent to help someone who is struggling).

anna's archive is a long con https://23.social/@thomasfricke/115926817942601598@hipsterelectron Not supporting Anna's or anything, but I just cannot get over this line:
The new complaint alleges that “competitive pressures drove NVIDIA to piracy”, which allegedly included collaborating with the controversial Anna’s Archive library.
Ah yes, they were driven by competitive pressures. So sad. I feel so bad for them.
