  • Disclaimer: I find it a little tacky to talk about metrics on the Fediverse. That is NOT why I am here.

BUT! It's worth saying out loud that I found a real community here that I am immensely grateful for.

The lack of algorithms - a mysterious black box determining which posts get seen - is a big bonus to me...

I spend hours writing articles... that people now REALLY read (unlike on Big Tech platforms, where my blog posts would be seen by 3-4 people because... god forbid you include a link to an external site. And that includes Bluesky, too).

Thank you for making me feel seen and heard and valued here ❤️

Ghost v.6 has new metrics built in... I was shocked to see the number of visitors to my first post about YunoHost: 955!

So even if I find it tacky to discuss numbers, this is not to brag. My main intention is to dispel any myths about Big Tech platforms... writers and creatives often say that they HAVE to be on X or Instagram or TikTok because that's where their audience is. Well, all Big Tech platforms have finicky, mysterious algorithms. I was on Twitter for 14+ years and none of my links ever got 955 visitors in 12 hours. So I wanted to put this out here to say:

    ANOTHER WAY IS POSSIBLE.

And it's even better than the old way.

Real community. Real engagement. Without surveillance capitalism.

What's not to love about this?

    #FediLove

@elena my guess would be that the very fact people are on Mastodon, probably means they are generally more inquisitive and interested in all sorts of topics, open minded, and willing to read and learn. You'd get similar results from trying to sell a book at a book festival and trying to sell that same book at a sports event. Unless the book is about that sport. 🤔😂

@jan thank you for the always super supportive messages Jan! I'm glad YOU are here. Have a great day!

@nohaironheed yup... but I also think it's because the Fediverse does not penalize posts with external links... unlike other platforms that want to keep users locked inside their feeds. I posted the same thing a few weeks ago... on the Fediverse (high engagement) and on Bluesky (where I have 1.1k followers). TOTAL CRICKETS on Bluesky, like 0 likes and 0 comments... despite the 1100+ followers. I think they subtly hide posts with links...

@elena I also like the discussion that follows interesting posts, across the range 😁 The Fediverse attracts educated people 😊

Recycled Plastic Compression Molding With 3D-Printed MoldsRecycling plastic at home using 3D printed molds is relatively accessible these days, but if you do not wish to invest a lot of money into specialized equipment, what’s the most minimal setup that you can get away with? In a recent [future things] video DIY plastic recycling is explored using only equipment that the average home is likely to have around.Lest anyone complain, you should always wear PPE such as gloves and a suitable respirator whenever you’re dealing with hot plastic in this manner, just to avoid a trip to the emergency room. Once taken care of that issue, there are a few ways of doing molding, with compression molding being one of the most straightforward types. With compression molding you got two halves of a mold, of which one compresses the material inside the other half. This means that you do not require any complex devices like with injection molding, just a toaster oven or equivalent to melt the plastic, which is LDPE in this example. The scrap plastic is placed in a silicone cup before it’s heated so that it doesn’t stick to the container. The wad of goopy plastic is then put inside the bottom part of the mold before the top part is put in place and squeezed by hand until molten plastic comes out of the overflow opening(s). After letting it fully cool down, the mold is opened and the part released. Although the demonstrated process can be improved upon, it seems to work well enough if you are aware of the limitations. In terms of costs and parts required it’s definitely hard to come up with a cheaper way to do plastic molding.youtube.com/embed/CWjjZHdZ4WQ?…hackaday.com/2026/03/16/recycl…
