thoughts?@Heliograph I'm running my own instance for just me: it's part of a server I rent via @hetzner and I'm running @gotosocial .
Running your own server is fun, it's a bit of hobby, but you have to understand you might very well pay 10-40EUR/month (or more depending on your wishes). -

@Heliograph Yeah ....

@Heliograph but check out @elena posts about self hosting: she's bound to have tips on good servers as well.

@Heliograph @leonieke hi! I would recommend looking into self-hosting via GoToSocial... it's really powerful and features-rich.
I have my account on a basic Hetzner plan, installed via YunoHost. I keep hearing that self-hosting Mastodon is very resource intensive and not worth the hassle... whereas GoToSocial is lightweight and easy to maintain.
There is an independent tool available called SLURP that even allows you to move your posts from Mastodon to GoToSocial. @box464 and @joel have written superb blog posts about this process (sorry I don't have links ready).
Good luck!
P.S.: this is sent to you from my own GoToSocial account where I set character limit to 5000... aka 10x the limit of Mastodon. It's a wonderful wonderful feeling not having to break posts into multiple threads 🤗

@Heliograph ah yes! Great quote 😆
As for #GoToSocial, if you’re not familiar with it, I wrote an article about it earlier this year: https://blog.elenarossini.com/gotosocial-empowers-you-to-have-your-own-home-on-the-fediverse-with-unique-controls/

@Heliograph @leonieke @box464 @joel YES!!!!
Disclaimer: I mispronounced it for like 4 months... but then the kind YunoHost people asked me to do a presentation for them, as part of a YunoHost users showcase/testimony at JDLL... and in the runup to it I realized the correct pronunciation was Why-You-No-Host... instead of You-No-Host 😅

@joel @Heliograph @leonieke @box464 now that I think of it... Why-You-No-Host is great when you're considering yunohost.org but haven't taken a leap into self-hosting yet...
A year in, I should think of it as you wrote: You Know Host 😆
