does anyone know what the really simple form of 3d transparency rendering is? like i know there's some system where you can do a nomal rendernig pipeline but mask it by a texture somehow and it doesn't involve doing a lot of fancy compositing

@shoofle "alpha mask" is probably the term you are looking for. this would be for opaque cutouts eg leaves.
however, you will have to remember to use a premultiplied alpha blending equation and make sure your textures have the alpha channel already premultiplied or you'll get weird artifacts https://www.realtimerendering.com/blog/gpus-prefer-premultiplication/
