@futurebird I am uncommonly bad at this sort of thing. Is "turn the thermostat up" hotter or colder? And that's a situation where you just have to dial in how many degrees you want it to be
On the heating => hotter. On the fridge => colder. Both have thermostats.
(At least this is what I think ...)

@futurebird The proper temperature setting of a refrigerator is 5 degrees C. "Temperature Control" clearly determines how precisely this value is kept, the stiffness of the thermostat. The long-term mean temperature is not affected by the knob, just how much it wiggles around it.

@futurebird Interesting example of how people interpret stuff... I feel like they should have left the words off, the numbers were clear until the words unnecessarily complicated it.
I'd like to contradict: Things were clear until @futurebird brought her natural sciences PoV in.
"Ordinary" people (whatever that means) interpret "max" as "more of what the device does for me", in the case of the fridge "cooling".
Conclusion: Natural scientists are not normal. (I am allowed to say this (I hope), I am one of them).

@futurebird haha these are just impossible! Why don’t they add some symbols like one, two, five snowflakes? (Btw Italian home appliance manuals are the absolute nightmare. They make no sense whatsoever. But Japanese ones- everything is beautifully logical)

My go-to example is the Esperanto translation of Alice Through The Looking Glass published by Evertype, which has 5 different translations of "Jabberwocky", each of which is absolutely "correct" and each of which is totally different from each other. Even the names of the poem differ.
In each case one can see the decisions the translator made balancing meter, rhyme, meaning, implications & nuance of the text, based on what it meant to them; how can a computer do that?

And it's not just expressions and turns of phrase, which are unique not only to each language but easily to each region.It's words. There is often no exact match. Many words in one language are not a precise correspondence to those in another.
So an elegant turn of phrase in one becomes a wordy explanation in the other. Or a misinterpretation.
Only someone fluent in both languages can convey the true meaning accurately and eloquently.
