Hrmm due to filling up my database allocation I have had to increase my Masto.Host subscription to $29 a month. Which for what it is is fine value. But is still a fair bit more than I ever meant to be paying for a social media thingy. I'm back to pondering going self-hosted.

@bloor that's what I'm doing, basically for the savings. how big has your DB gotten, out of curiosity?

@eigen Masto.Host control panel says 10GB. Although the dump/backup is far less.

@bloor FWIW, my instance sits happily on a VPS for ~£4.50 a month and has quite a bit of spare capacity (I think it's got 200G or so of disk)

@bloor I'm in a similar position.
I don't want to host at home or on my VPS, as I'm assuming it's when, not if that there is a widely used vulnerability. Keeping it away from anything else I care about is important.
I don't know if it would be much cheaper. -

I don't know if it would be much cheaper.@dtl I was kinda thinking run it at home tbh. I have fairly stable power and gigabit internet. And real IPv4/6 etc.

@bloor I don't have the networking chops to keep it sufficiently away from anything else on the Lan.

FWIW, I quite happily run it at home on a NUC.
Although I've got gigabit internet, it turns out it'd probably have been fine on ADSL too
I have moved media to object storage though, which helps a lot

I am self-hosted, on an N100 Intel NUC.
I am not using docker.
I do not do anything fancy to keep it going (and it gets a fair workout :)).
It is not the most trivial installation, but not is it too bad.

Denying anthropogenic climate change? No. I worked for four years in a climate change non-profit. In this thread, I gave a few examples of human activities that cause greenhouse gas emissions.
My sole point is that it's sad when people don't understand the relative importance of different activities for causing climate change.

@jaypeach53 @WeirdWriter Audiobooks are a great option to engage with stories, and still have that same imagination aspect. For me, I became blind when I was 14 and had to go learn braille (alongside relearning everything). Learning at a later age like that, I'm a comparatively slow reader. Personal preferences aside, the main point is engaging with stories; print, ebook, braille, audio, whatever works for you.

Thank you for standing up to this moronity , we have brains so we can use them. If, say, you have a fun little “device” that would make a cute “parlor trick” that is all & fine, because that’s temporary. This stuff they have they want to take over your life with and not use your brain at all! (It’s bad enough with phones and young people these days )
Being able to use my imagination has helped me through many tough times in my life.💕
