@MLE_online yes, if I got dropped off anywhere near the shore. that would be the easiest case

@aeva couldn't you just get to the shore and see if the shore was on your left or right while facing southish towards the sun if you wanted to know which side of the lake you were on? assuming it's a sunny day

@MLE_online However, if I drove around until I found a highway I'd be able to figure out all of the information I needed just from driving on that highway, and since I live in Chicago, it would mostly be a matter of figuring out the correct direction to follow said highway.

@MLE_online yes. I think I could also do it without stopping at a gas station to ask where I am, though it would likely take a while depending on what time of day I'm released, and I don't particularly want to put it to the test either way.
Figuring out where North is relatively easy if it is day time or the sky is clear. Figuring out which side of Lake Michigan I'm on is a little more tricky but, I could probably guess based on if I recognize the name of the nearest town or city.

"Thrive" seems like a bad match of a word for the concept it embodies, phonologically speaking.
"I'm thriving" is not the kind of mouth sounds you should be making if everything's great. "I'm thriving" is giving "I'm barely avoiding spitting in my conversation partner's face while holding my guts in"
