Finally put on a respirator and dug into the suspicious edge of the office ceiling and... I'm so fucking mad.
There's a roof leak somewhere that's been leaking into the corner of the wall and the ceiling for, apparently, a long time. The previous owner (a landlord) appears to have _not_ fixed the leak and simply covered the original plaster wall with drywall. The top of that drywall is now so soft that I can pull it off by hand, the screws they used to anchor it are rusted. And there's mold.

So I've gotta go into the finished attic, tear down the wall so I can get out to that edge of the house and try to find the leak. Then I have to tear out the drywall, dry everything, treat it with fungicide I guess, and cover it over again?
This was supposed to be a clean and paint job.

Luckily I don't have central HVAC so even if it's black mold, it shouldn't have spread to other rooms. In fact, I cultured the main living areas last year and didn't grow anything concerning. Still, probably smart to mask up in that room while working on it from now on. Ugh.

judging by the erosion, it looks like water's' been running down the front of the plaster, which is good, because that means hopefully the studs behind it aren't getting wet. The joists are probably wet, though. This is so frustrating.

Could not locate the leak from either on top of the roof or in the attic, but I was able to localize it to this area, I believe. Hopefully, I got it with the cake icing treatment. Guess we'll find out next rain.

I am going to find and kill whoever covered this leak with drywall.
