I wonder if the configuration space of all genomes contains a version of rice that is popcorn.

I looked on wikipedia and they said Rice Krispies are "crisped rice". Great. Thanks. Thank you
@mcc crisped rice and sugar. probably the other way round tbh.
plain crisped rice is really not appetising.

How do you make Rice Krispies. What exactly are they. Are they something you can make at home
@mcc OFFFS, I can't believe you made me go look up answers to this.
<sigh>

@mcc I once briefly investigated this, on account of my kids consuming unholy amounts of rice “waffles” (unsweetened puffed rice cakes. Like cardboard, but a bit better.)
The answer is no. You need considerable pressure, more than any usual kitchen implement will deliver.

"Puffed Rice" as a keyword is finding some pretty compelling looking results. The first one is supposed to be masala flavor

@mcc as far as i know you basically can't puff rice at home because it requires high pressure.
potentially the object known as the "popcorn cannon" can do it, but honestly popcorn cannons seem like extremely dangerous devices to begin with and it seems like a bad idea.

@dysfun well, we don't often eat popcorn plain either i think

@mcc indeed, it takes just moments of doing so before you realise why

@mcc I assume so. There can only be so many ways to puff rice.

@mcc (not talking about Chinese / Asian rice cakes made from rice flour here, of course)

@slothrop @mcc There are two major ways to make the crispy kind, and both are doable at home. You can steam the rice (e.g, in a pressure cooker) then bake it until it pops, or you can cook the rice as if you were going to eat it, dry it out, then deep-fry it.
Both methods are a lot of time and effort for a relatively small result, but it’s possible.
The higher-pressure-than-you-can-get-at-home method is for a softer, spongier type.

@operand @mcc doesn't "The Detonator" sound like something you want to use in your kitchen https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Detonator_Popcorn_Popper.jpg

@mcc I dont think you can (easily anyway) puff rice at home. On the other hand, bags of unflavoured puffed rice should be readily available at Indian stores (and maybe other Asian stores) near you.
We use it as in ingredient in a bunch of snacks.

@mcc as a kid i always imagined they dehydrated the rice for that, so I'm surprised to see other people here agreeing that it's probably puffed rice... interesting
