@Edent what's so bad about <div> ... or: Why do you want to avoid them?
-
@james in a roundabout way 😄
@Edent Excellent (there's no direct way from Melbourne in any case!). Have a good flight to wherever you're going next
-
-
@Edent If my body wants to sleep I am always willing 😄
-
@Edent I've been listening to books long enough that I don't think about it, but options that might work on a plane include hand stretches, applying hand lotion, filing nails, or organizing belongings in carry-on bag.
-
@Edent I mostly listen to podcasts when running (which avoids the problem) but the one audiobook I listened to recently was a 32 hour unabridged reading of Joyce's Ulysses, which I listened to (@ 1.3x) while simultaneously reading the book. The combination of both at once kept my attention from wandering and helped me power thru endless lists and diversions and rambles and "what *is* this?"

@Edent the .txt link gave me the blog post, but as a 404! is this intentional?

@davidgerard seems to work here. What's the full URl you're using?
(NB currently jeylagged, so entirely possible I've broken something.)

@Edent @davidgerard I can confirm that https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2025/12/a-small-collection-of-text-only-websites.txt returns
HTTP/2.0 404 Not Found, but with the actual text format blog post as the body. -

A small collection of text-only websites
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2025/12/a-small-collection-of-text-only-websites/A couple of years ago, I started serving my blog posts as plain text. Add .txt to the end of any URl and get a deliciously lo-fi, UTF-8, mono[chrome|space] alternative.

@Edent hmm. I tend to only consume an audio book when I'm doing something else, like driving, walking the dogs or doing housework. Otherwise I read

@Edent I often listen to audio books when doing work around the house, during walks and while flying or taking public transportation. Stuff that requires minimal mental bandwidth.

@Edent I got His Dark Materials read by Philip Pullman himself accompanied by a voice cast from a charity shop. It's nearly 14 hours long. I tend to listen in the car on long-ish journeys, but that took weeks. The BBC productions of Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Gaiman are as excellent as @neil suggest. I'm still hunting/saving for the LoTR production with Ian Holm as Frodo

@neil @Edent I've got a big collection of (mostly) BBC radio plays that I've accumulated over the years of recording them, and, while there's a lot of variability in quality, there's a lot of absolutely brilliant ones. Mostly, I listen to them while cooking, and I did a lot while commuting in the car a few years back.

@sborrill@justfollow.me.uk @Edent@mastodon.social @neil@mastodon.neilzone.co.uk I bought that LotR set when it was released on gold CDs. We'd nearly worn out the cassettes.
