while making this post i found out that while the thing the dutch call this, ringel-s, is a term that once came from german, the vast majority of germans won't know wtf a ringel-s is cause now only dutch people call it that

@eniko isn't it called something like scharfes s in German? Or was that 40 years ago too?

@eniko @oblomov I do remember Ringel-S from my childhood. Scharfes S too.

But 99.9% of the time, it's just SZ.

The weird thing about it is that it's a ligature of s+z, but the only alternative spelling anyone ever uses is ss, and never sz.

@yora the sound it makes started out as something written "zz", the ß ligature is sometimes a "sz" (ſz) or an "ss" (ſs) ligature as hundreds of years ago the sound would sometimes be spelled sz or ss depending on its position in the word. it depends on the region of germany whether it's being taught as "eszett" or "scharf-s" to children @eniko @oblomov
