I don't know if modern Web developers are aware how much of a struggle it was to get to the HTML5 stack we use today. There was a loooooooooot of bullshit to wade through. VBScript, ActiveX, Java applets, browser plugins, Flash. It was a fight every step of the way.

The Web Standards Project was instrumental in this work. Their efforts probably generated a trillion dollars in value for the planet and saved countless lives. Open standards fucking matter.

@evan I remember this one gaming site that uses a bunch of frames and a Java app in the top bar to control the whole rest of the frame.. and man.. getting that Java app to work and be signed and… >_<

@BreakingNerd I mean, that's a bad practice, sure, but it wasn't a commercial product by a single company foisted onto the Internet by gullible Web developers. Nobody had to download RealPlayer to get a table layout to work.

I wonder if @davew ever talks about some of the grotesque syndication products like PointCast and Castanet from the late 90s when he's discussing the history of RSS.

@davew I mean, TIL about the relationship of RSS to Pointcast. I already knew that you can look things up using the Google search engine, even if I don't always practice it.

i was very impressed with pointcast.
that CNN on the Desktop piece ran in Wired.
and they quoted it everywhere.
it was a breakthrough. probably not the most elegant implementation, but wow what an idea.

btw i was ready to help you too. shortly after i moved to nyc and got settled in i was going to come up to montreal for a visit, but somehow right at that moment you and a bunch of other familiar people were meeting privately with someone from google. i had seen that movie before too in many instances of the tech industry.
i see the long journey you took from that, i think we might have gotten there quickly.

@adriananselmo no, ma è statisticamente più probabile trovare post stimolanti e, di certo, è quantomeno strano se si verifica il contrario. Sono nel fediverso da un bel po' e ho account diversi su istanze diverse: come ti sarai già accorta, la qualità della timeline la fai tu; e stare in un'istanza più attiva di certo non limita la tua esperienza
La tesi di @oblomov è piuttosto discutibile.

Dopo quasi tre settimane piene a sentirmi indietro rispetto ai miei compagni di corso, oggi finalmente è giunto il mio momento (inatteso): gli esercizi sulla busta paga azzeccati tutti e prima di tutti gli altri.
Dico inatteso perché tutto sono, meno che una persona a suo agio con i numeri. Ma qualcosa dal corso di paghe e contributi di un anno fa, che pensavo completamente dimenticato, evidentemente è rimasta incisa a fuoco nella mia anima.
Ho picchiato la testa al muro su infiniti esercizi che non capivo mai fino in fondo! Mi dev'essere rimasto l'occhio per le cose che sbagliavo più spesso.
