@Edent what's so bad about <div> ... or: Why do you want to avoid them?

@Edent Welcome to Melbourne!

@Kay @Edent Oh I agree 100%! I was only pointing out that Dune doesn't bear comparison to movies such as Avatar, which are fully invested in the colonialist, White Saviour narrative that Herbert set out to deconstruct. We see Paul ruthlessly exploit the Fremen in order to avenge the death of his family, and the whole story is a dark parable about the dangers of trusting Messianic authority figures. If faithful to the book, this should become even more apparent in Villeneuve's Part 3.
@ApostateEnglishman @Edent On reflection Jake Sully could be seen as a White Saviour in the Avatar films except that he's no longer white, he's "gone native", and the Na'vi saved him more than him saving them.
White Saviour Reversed if he was a Tarot card, maybe?
The Na'vi say that every person is born twice. The second time is when you earn your place among the people, forever. 😉

@kubikpixel @jbjrkng @Edent @briar it's nice to hear that, true that not many people know this
-
@Edent nice to see indeed! Not so nice that they are on a separate 'page' though 😬
-
@Edent I tried to see if iPhone's Live Photos are the same standard. I couldn't work out how to transfer the original file to my computer :(
-
@Edent I was looking at exactly the same fairly recently - this would have saved me some time!
One slightly surprising effect of the video being embedded in the JPEG file is that you can receive a file that appears to be a static photo, until you forward it to someone else on WhatsApp, at which point it magically becomes a video...
-
@Edent I think WordPress may have stripped the other items out of the images when you uploaded it, and it's served up on the blog,
I'm only seeing 964k download size and no embedded video when testing

@ben oooh! You're not wrong!
Looks like image optimisation stuff has been a bit too eager. Will see if I can fix it later. -

@Edent it’s set around AD 14,000 or so
@fazalmajid
Even more! Dates like 10191 are AG or after guild. Estimates on guild founding as I recall are around 12000 AD. So Dune takes place past 22000AD there are alternate timeliNes that put it at about 25000AD -
@Edent I suffer from all those issues too - which is why I only ever listen to them when I'm out on a walk - which isn't super helpful if you're aiming to try to listen to one on a flight!
-
@Edent
Close your eyes and focus on the audio and hope you don't fall asleep. 😁 -
@Edent jigsaws!
-
@Edent I normally listen whilst driving - but when listening & not driving I tend to either close my eyes or just look without focus into the middle distance.
-
@Edent Usually doing something else anyway but I guess that's harder if on a plane. Draw?
-
@Edent I can only listen to audiobooks while doing other things. Mostly the more mindless work tasks. Sometimes there’s a conflict and I have to back a ways.
-
@Edent Usually I'm doing something physical, like mowing the lawn or driving. So how about flying the plane?
😂 -
@Edent since you are sitting: maybe simple games with minimal input like Tetris, breakout, etc?
interesting question, I listen to many audio books but I’m always busy doing something. Walking, washing dishes, driving, etc -
@Edent I'll be honest, even if it is not the advice you're looking for: If you drift off to sleep, it is probably a sign that you're sleep deprived and need the sleep. Is it important to stay awake because of jet lag? (I'm very ignorant on this topic and haven't flown in a long time)

@Edent knitting. And I end up with a useful item as a bonus
