@nomad mostly just allowing my phone to have access to the mp3s and photos currently stored on some external HDs.

I know the no-brain way to do this is cloud storage. I guess I wanted something where I'm not always looking over my shoulder for the possibility that a cloud service is scraping my files or suddenly decide something is against their TOS.

@amorphophalex apparently drobo went out of business but synology is similar

@amorphophalex Technically, you don't need a dedicated server for that. If you just want that and nothing else take a look at jellyfin and Plex.
If you want to do server things to learn server things then that's a different situation. đ¸
