It's all about control.
Do you really think when a 3 letter agency asks you to create a way for them to be able to receive decryption keys that you have any chance to say no?
TrueCrypt allegedly got a letter from a government agency which forced them to either create a security hole or stop all together.
Luckily for us, they choose the later.
PS. This is not a conspiracy theory. This is how the world operates.
