So, today I announce the kickoff of my implementation of the #MavericksForever and #OFObjectiveCForever project. Just for fun, of course.

Yesterday I received my MacBook Air 11“ 2014 from Okamac. The display had some light spots at the edges. So the display was exchanged within days and now I‘ve got an almost perfect MacBook.

Aim is to get up and running a beautiful and classic Mac OS X environment, running only classic and good (open source) software.

So let's see if I can get #MavericksForever running.

First problem: There is no current #Nextcloud desktop client which I need of course to have access to my files. #MountainDuck is a very great software to connect a #WebDAV resource with integration into the #Finder. Support of iterate GmbH responded immediately and told me I could use a version 5 license to run the available version for Mavericks, 2.7.2. So let's try that!

Yes, it works! And it's waaay quicker than the buildin #WebDAV support #Finder provides. #MountainDuck ️

Second problem: Of course I need access to my service credentials as well. They mostly lie in a #Keepass database, which I want to open using #MacPass of course. But there've been many fixes since the last #Mavericks release. So I need to try and build it for Mavericks. Installing #Xcode …

Ok, it can be done, but it will be some work to compile #MacPass and its dependencies for #Mavericks. Because I can tweak Xcode to use llvm-18 installed by #MacPorts, but still Foundation’s classes won’t show support for modern code features like generics (which I have to remove or, to do it right, create macro based target switches). Time to create a fork so.

That’s definitely a reason to use @objfw for classic Mac OS X apps as well: Foundational classes will remain the same and support modern language features on any platform #llvm works on.

@jwh Yes, and a fabulous app like #MailMate just looks great using the standard Cocoa controls. That’s different today. It looks kinda boring on a modern macOS because there’s so much space left for individual styling, prominent iOS app have today.

So it seems that #MacPass needs a backport, same for #MacDown, which starts, but doesn’t open any document.
Luckily #Adium starts without any problems, it just needs a #Matrix plugin of course:

@lazarus Do Adium have any plugin which allows to use messenger chat? This one from meta/fb. There was something like that for Pidgin few years ago, but seems that it isn't working anymore after meta did some changes in their engines.

@MartinaNeumayer Think there hasn‘t been any Adium development for a long time. But I also don‘t know anything about FB messenger.
