Anyone want to help me with my computer? :3
I've got an old mini PC that most likely is running a core 2 duo, 8 gb of ram, has a VGA and DVI port for the integrated intel graphics, a pci express x16 (and probably another smaller pci express slot, didn't think to take note) on it.
If I were to find a PCI express card to add usbc ports, would I be able to have it send display port over usbc, or do I need to have a graphics card that can support that?
EDIT: ans is I need a GPU that supports it
hmmm ok it looks like pci express video cards that have usb-c ports on them seem to generally be roughly the size of a boat, so this plan isn't going to work

@aeva you could probably Frankenstein together something with one or more active adapters but this is not trivial.
The short version is that VGA/DVI/HDMI are all basically locked to the dot clock for a virtual CRT that, at this point, usually does not actually exist and needs HBlank, VBlank periods to retrace the electron beams.
And then extra data (such as HDMI audio) is transmitted over the signal pins during the blank periods.
@rygorous fascinating

@aeva there should be cards with a HDMI input to passthrough over USB cuz that's what some motherboards do

@aeva You may well find that the cost of trying to upgrade your old machine is higher than buying a new one, especially if you are running Windoz and are getting hit with the Windoz 11 issues.
(If your machine only has VGA/DVI then it is quite old.)
Remember, the Display Port over USB-C is DisplayPort - and a lot of monitors do not have USB-C (with Display port carriage) or even native display port.
(I tend to run Linux so I am only mentioning the Windoz issues second hand.)
I've been quite pleased with the NUC and similar small sized mini-PCs. (I"m using ASUS, Moginsok, and Geekom ones, but they can be a bit pricey.)
Also DP-over USB-C tends to require good quality cables - cheap USB-C cables may not work.

@karlauerbach yeah I'm just curious if there's an inexpensive way to plug my cintiq into this old machine. the cintiq can do mini hdmi, so a dvi to mini hdmi adapter is probably the cheapest way, and then I'll probably want a card for the usb-c for just the regular digitizer stuff, assuming a usb2/usb-c adapter wouldn't be suitable

@karlauerbach plugging one thing in instead of two would be more convenient though

the main open question is whether or not an old core 2 duo is fast enough to run mollytime (i'd certainly like it to be!), but that is easy enough to confirm.

@aeva well I *remember* them being fast...

@ghosttie they hold up quite well if you're quick with a knife, but I've been developing mollytime on a fairly beefy computer so how it scales down is an unknown at the moment

@aeva You can get a much much much newer mini-PC used on eBay for a less than a hundred that already supports it (or has a proprietary slot that one can be installed... Looking at you HP). Although, I get the feeling this may be a challenge to make the old PC usable again? I tried to see for myself and only saw that you have cute cats and the same air purifier I do. XD

@MontgomeryGator yeah it's an old PC that still works that I don't mind putting in some work to make it useful. If this doesn't work out, I'll probably put windows 98 or xp on it and load it up with old software

@aeva Hmm, ever try Haiku? It's an interesting OS that should run smoothly on that hardware. Not super useful, but it's what's left of BEos and an interesting look at a future that could have been with PCs.

@MontgomeryGator I've been meaning to give it a try, this would probably be perfect for it actually

@MontgomeryGator I wonder if it supports my soundblaster card 🤔

@aeva It looks like later soundblaster cards need a driver from the package manager.

@MontgomeryGator ah, interesting, but there is a driver?
