Extremely disappointed and saddened by the revelations about Cesar Chavez.
I met him as a young child; he visited the NYC church my parents were active in, and we helped host a dinner for him. Somewhere I still have my "boycott grapes" UFW button. Their struggle played a formative role in my understanding of justice and social responsibility.
It would be convenient to simply hail Chavez as an uncomplicated hero. But the truth matters, and we honor justice only by letting it be told.

@mattblaze I never met him, but way back when, he was one of my idols. I'm gratified, at least, that the UFW is currently pausing any celebrations, though the NY Times did note that they never took earlier allegations seriously enough to do anything.

@SteveBellovin Yes, doing the right thing late is better than not at all, but not as good as doing it at the time.

@mattblaze I've become resigned to the fact that many, if not most men, were creeps back then. Especially men in positions of power. Even those who did grand and admirable things.
MeToo was decades late, though it's encouraging that it happened at all.
To me the important thing is that we recognize and acknowledge the creepy side of the creeps, even those who seemed admirable in other ways, and use that to help fight creepery now.

@mattblaze it is always hard when those we idolize let us down. It is a good reminder that we are all human, flaws and all.
For all the good that someone does, there could be aspects of their nature that we do not agree with. For the most part, no one person is all good or all bad.
That does not lesson the disappointment when flaws are revealed and understanding of a persons changes.
People are complex.

@mattblaze I think it's likely that there will be similarly unpleasant revelations about MLK next year when the FBI surveillance transcripts are fully unsealed (based on evidence that he was an accessory to rape).
