  • in a Cafe in Aotearoa New Zealand:

A small human (3?) declares to Grandad, "Grandad did you know I'm a bug?!"
Grandad nods thoughtfully. "Oh yeah? What type? A fluffy bum*"
    "No a BIG SPIDER!"
"You sure? Because you look more like a fluffy bum."
    "Noo! A SPIDER!"

A very friendly white big dog (staffy?) is sitting in the back of a car with the windows rolled down.
Friendly Dog wants to share the love with EVERYONE and people are stopping to give her a pat before they go into the nearby cafe to order coffees.
    Priorities are priorities after all.

A woman (50s?) is waiting in line for coffee when she says to a friend, "Do you ever have days when it feels like it's raining in your head?"
Her friend wraps an arm around her shoulders and gives her a very big hug.

A woman (20s?) is sitting at a cosy table, headphones on, writing in a neat cursive in a journal as the world goes on about her. A hot chocolate by her side, love heart in the foam. Small smile on her face.

A man in sensible business clothes (30s?) speaking with his outside voice, is showing his partner a spreadsheet as he argues the benefits of adding a third person to their relationship.
He earnestly says: "Just consider the angles!"
Deadpan, she replies: "Fascinating. Tell me more."

Any typos spotted in this post are highly amused by the happenings at the next table. They're trying not to listen, but there's a volume situation that makes it impossible not to hear and the typos do respect a well written spreadsheet that considers all the angles.

*Fluffy bums are the Kiwi nickname for juvenile passion vine hoppers. They look quite a bit like irate brown goldfish with bug legs and a fluffy bottom: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/197046857

@georgepenney I already have a list of reasons I want to visit New Zealand, but now the top of that list is fluffy bums.

    @frogglin @georgepenney

I just did an online search, and …

… a FLUFFY BUM is an actual insect in New Zealand.

It's the nymph of a passionvine hopper.

@georgepenney Reminds me of a conversation I couldn't help overhearing years ago in a Thai restaurant: an extremely pompous sounding man loudly declared: "I hate being obstructed by inanimate objects." Was glad I had a delicious curry to snort into ☺️

  • @pfr Yes, this works for me, too. I immediately use a cover (because the only time I didn't use a cover, many years ago, it fell and a dent appeared). But from time to time I change the screen protector and cover and it feels like I have a new phone!

@georgepenney @robini71 Quail are adorable! I love seeing their little chicks and my favorite is the noise of warning the lookout makes! To me, the warning cry of the California Quail sounds as if hundreds of soap bubbles are rapidly popping! I call the crest a thinking feather, but the way they run one way and suddenly another, I'm uncertain how much thinking is done.

#Spotted While Roaming in Aotearoa New Zealand:A man (60s?) is lugging a big plastic crate of Christmas ornaments from a shed while two small humans (3 & 4?) supervise, excitedly leading the way back into a pretty wooden bungalow. A sleek tabby cat bringing up the rear.A man (20s?) in baggy skater wear is crouching next to a brown miniature poodle, saying: "You're an AWESOME girl. Yes you are! YES you ARE" Miniature Poodle is a woolly wiggle of rapturous adoration. Fluffy tail wagging, tummy on show for pats. Two mud covered men, sitting on muddy mountain bikes, are having a contented chat in the lee of a building as a light rain falls. One says to the other: "Good ride, eh?" The other laughs: "Yeah. I'm so happy I got to do it, although, I think it was more a slide than a ride!"Three small humans (3 to 6?) are performing a VERY special play on a community stage. It involves a whole variety of singing, and some unexpected honking noises. Their audience a few curious seagulls. Mum and Dad chilling at a nearby restaurant.A big community Christmas tree in the background.Three generations of the same family (Nan, Mum and Teen) are strutting down the street in their best black jeans and metal T-shirts. Nan's a fan of Pantera. Mum likes Ghost and Teen's rocking old school Metallica. Cheerful chatter as they go.(continued below)

#Spotted at a Country Festival in Aotearoa New Zealand:A small human (4?) with tiger face paint is facing another bigger small human (5?) with spiderman face paint. With great authority she announces: "I am a TIGER which is MUCH BETTER than SPIDERMAN. so you HAVE to do what I say!"Numerous tiny humans and their dads are lined up to sit in a fire engine and to make the BIG HOSE go. Both tiny humans and dads showing equal levels of excitement. This is a FIRE ENGINE. You don't get cooler than that.A small, stern young human (4?) is fiercely studying an elderly Jersey cow who is calmly accepting all pats as her due. When Mum asks if Small Human would like to pat the cow he scowls. "That is NOT A COW! It's a dog. You pat dogs!"Placid Jersey Cow seems unbothered by this bendy taxonomy.A tiny human (2?) is most insistent that her Care Bear should get to cuddle some sleeping piglets. The only problem is... how?Tiny Piglets are snuggled up, snoozing in their hut and she cant quite reach them through the fence.Hmmm.Maybe Care Bear cuddles can happen long distance instead.A young human (4?) is given a precious sausage wrapped in a slice of white bread, tomato sauce* on top. This is valuable treasure and she's carefully trying to maneuver it into her sparkly unicorn handbag. But what is this?!For some inexplicable reason Dad is objecting to this excellent plan.

Any typos spotted in this post spent a delightful afternoon at the beach last weekend only to have two weka parents and their chicks try to steal a) a bucket hat, b) a jandal* and c) a piece of fish from our fish and chips. If spotted please remind them to take a picture! They keep forgetting.*Wekas are a beloved local bird that will absolutely snaffle anything. See picture. They look innocent and quiet but they are very very very sneaky.*The shags in this case were Chatham Islands shags as far as I could tell.*Jandals are flip flops or thongs.
