Honestly can't figure out why everyone isn't using Linux at this point.

  • Honestly can't figure out why everyone isn't using Linux at this point. Microsoft and Apple are fighting to make the worst desktop experience and somehow both are winning.

You like games? Steam Proton on Linux seems to play everything now? I mean, I don't game much, so I don't really know, but every game I've looked up on the compatibility page in the past year or so has been "gold" or better.

Fedora looks real nice, easy to use, makes it easy to get non-free drivers now (previously an issue).

@swelljoe 90% of non-tech people have never heard of Linux. I am a non-tech person and only braved Linux because I learned a bit more since I'm here on Masto. It was a lot of work/ research to find halfway decent tutorials made for clueless people like me. 95% of them used words I had never heard of and had no idea what they meant. I tried to install Linux (Ubuntu) last weekend (because my drawing tablet only works with Ubuntu). I did everything as I was supposed to do. It did not work. I have no idea what I did wrong without an idea how to fix whatever went wrong and searching online did not magically turn up solutions. THAT'S why not everyone uses Linux. It was and is a tech nerd thing unusuable for those who aren't learning it for years.

@DrJLecter so, installing Linux was difficult, but have you ever had to perform a fresh install Windows or Mac OS? Having installed Windows and Linux hundreds of times, I'd argue it's quite a lot easier to install a good Linux distribution (Ubuntu is not my favorite, but it's Good Enough) than Windows on a new PC, but you never see that because 90% of new PCs sold have Windows preinstalled.

There are systems builders that preinstall Linux, for what it's worth.

@swelljoe which "normal" person out there has ever installed Windows though? You are talking about yourself, but want everyone else to do the same as if it's a common thing and everyone else just refuses to be smart. Have your parents ever installed windows? Your neighbours? Your mail person? Pizza deliverer? Waiter? When you ask why people not just use Linux, you're not talking about people like yourself, you're talking about THEM. And that's just not gonna happen until it's made a LOT easier.

@DrJLecter I'm not suggesting installing Windows or Linux for everyone! I'm saying Windows has a leg up in your use case because your computer already had Windows (or Mac OS) installed. Having it already done for you by your PC maker is infinitely easier than having to do it yourself.

There are vendors that preinstall Linux, so you (and my mom and mail carrier) don't have to.

  • One thing we have to start talking about is that there's no going back to the status quo ante. We have to start talking about the world that we want after.

  • auster@thebrainbin.org you're right, the experience is definitely sub-par, and it's because both Mastodon and the Threadiverse use the Announce activity for different purposes.

Mastodon uses it to boost posts to the feed (overriding existing logic re: replies being suppressed), and the Threadiverse uses it to keep different instances up to date.

It could be made better in that when a group actor announces a reply, Mastodon doesn't promote it to the feed. Not sure if that's easy to do.
