It's not just the algorithms that makes social media addictive.
It's also that substitute action, (ie: going to see people IRL) is getting harder by the day.
The state closes libraries, crack down on any non-commercialized space where people meet, and the only third spaces left are bars and overpriced coffee shops.
If you're poor or don't like hanging out around drunk men, there's no spaces left.The alternatives are eroding faster than people are rebuilding third spaces (I will try one day).

Fedi/mastodon *is* addictive to me despite no algorithms, because of the loss of third spaces alternatives.
