So, yes, this is Winslow.

  • So, yes, this is Winslow. Though Winslow has a different name, because Winslow is someone else’s cat. I got confirmation the other night when my neighbor said, “that’s my cat.”

My neighbor is nice. But her home life is perhaps not the best. It’s “that house”, if you know what I mean. I’m not trying to steal anyone’s cat. But for a week, long before we knew he had a home, he slept in an upturned plastic box with a towel on our porch.

@colorblindcowboy Oh that’s so hard. If there wasn’t the issues of allergies (some people are ok taking meds and I’ve heard several accounts of people building up an immunity with their own cat so that they no longer experience the symptoms with their own cat), or bunny (some cats are ok around them but that could be a risk) I’d suggest having a conversation with your neighbour to explain that you’ve noticed their cat was a bit skinny and seeking shelter so maybe you could co-parent.
Maybe a letter if talking directly feels like too much.

Perhaps in time they’ll see how better cared for kitty is in your care.
If eventually you were willing and able to fully adopt kitty maybe your neighbours would be ok with that.
If they’re honest about their inability to properly care for kitty, they might even be relieved knowing kitty is still close by and better cared for.

@stephaniepixie Thank you. Yeah. It’s hard to tell what’s going on over there. I don’t know why kitty had to choose us, but he did.

Good advice. I appreciate it. I get so worried about these. Little goobers.

@colorblindcowboy You might find out your neighbours are stressed and would like to better care for kitty but just can’t.
Maybe I’ve watched too many Dodo cat and dog rescue videos but many of them have had serious but respectful conversations with pet owners about giving their pet a better home.

Even if it’s not you maybe if your neighbours are willing to release their cat you could help find a new home.
Maybe a local shelter has some advice on how to do that without taking kitty until it’s safe to do so.

Whatever you choose to do it’s a really caring thing you’re doing to help keep kitty healthy and cared for. I hope it works out one way or the other.

Preparing to Fire Up a 90-Year-Old Boiler After Half a CenturyContinuing the restoration of the #1 Lancashire boiler at the Claymills Pumping Station in the UK, the volunteers are putting on the final touches after previously passing the boiler inspection. Although it may seem that things are basically ready to start laying down a fire after the boiler is proven to hold 120 PSI with all safeties fully operating, they first had to reassemble the surrounding brickwork, free up a seized damper shaft and give a lot of TLC to mechanisms that were brand new in the 1930s and last operated in 1971.Removing the ashes from a Lancashire boiler. (Credit: Claymills pumping station, YouTube)The damper shaft is part of the damper mechanism which controls doors that affect the burn rate, acting as a kind of throttle for the boilers. Unfortunately the shaft’s bearings had seized up completely, and no amount of heat and kinetic maintenance could loosen it up again. This forced them to pull it out and manufacture a replacement, but did provide a good look at how it’s put together. The original dial indicator was salvaged, along with some other bits that were still good.Next was to fit the cast-iron ash boxes that sit below the boiler and from where ash can be scraped out and deposited into wheelbarrows. The automatic sprinkler stokers are fitted above these, with a good look at their mechanism. The operator is given a lot of control over how much coal is being fed into the boiler, as part of the early 20th-century automation. The missing furnace doors on the #1 boiler were replaced with replicas based on the ones from the other boilers, and some piping around the boiler was refurbished. Even after all that work, it’ll still take a few weeks and a lot more work to fully reassemble the boiler, showing just how complex these systems are. With some luck it’ll fire right back up after fifty years of slumbering and decades of suffering the elements.youtube.com/embed/6Dviv0cIJBo?…hackaday.com/2026/03/17/prepar…

@stefano LLMs are so boring. I much prefer the spam from the early 2000s when it was gibberish and random sections of classic books ("A Tale of Two Cities" and "Wuthering Heights" to be specific) intersecting with each other. It was at the very least creative and highly entertaining. It also demonstrated someone had thoroughly *too much* time on their hands. 🤣
