Weird how we have 'request an account' enabled and don't have nazis signing up.
'We're a huge instance so we get targeted a lot' = you're too big. You're putting growth ahead of community safety; you're saying 'yeah we're so big that nazis target us but we'll just deal with it and sometimes one might slip through the cracks and tens/hundreds/thousands of people will be exposed to this nazi' instead of 'yikes, maybe we're too big'.

You know what MY rollercoaster is? Cleaning up after open sign-up instances (see my posts on https://www.patreon.com/c/WelshPixie1 and see what I spend most of my time doing).
'We suspended the account, of course. But not before a lot of people yelled at us.' Yeah? You've decided to have open sign ups and so nazis sometimes sign up, this is what you can expect, and people are RIGHT to yell at you for that.
'For the record, this is not preventable when registration is open.' There's your clue!!

You can either spend your admin time cleaning up reports of nazis and dealing with the fallout from rightfully pissed off people, or you can spend that admin time going through account requests. I know I would (and do) rather spend a bit of time every day manually vetting sign ups so that the Black, disabled, queer, neurospicy, etc. people on .art are safe -

What this tells me, again, is that you care more about growth and will whine about all the hard volunteer work you have to put in in order to HAVE that growth at the risk of community safety, instead of spending LESS effort just turning on account verification, saving yourselves mod work, saving your and every community connected to yours the trauma of seeing a nazi popping up in their feed.

@welshpixie And then he goes on to say they have mods in basically every time zone. You mean mods who can go through and approve new accounts???

I've been on Meetic first and then on Tinder.
My privilege, as a man, is that I'm not exposed to threats, I never felt endangered, while a woman also have to cope with that.
This being said, I think that whoever uses dating apps can tell stories about how ridiculously (to say the least) people behave over there.
Dating apps are the place to be if you really want to have a look at humankind from the inside, and most of time that's disheartening.
I could tell you about many women I met on dating apps that (in my opinion) should be sent to a crash course on manners.
Everyone has their own cross to bear... 🙂

@bnewbold.net I also think that we provide location-independent addressing; we just do it in the way other Web systems do, with DNS. You can move a Mastodon installation from one hosting service to another, re-map the DNS, and the server is live on the network again.

1. We do distribute data, not just metadata, including binary data. It can be pushed, or it can be pulled.
2. It's not just a message-passing system; it's a distributed data store. Every object on the network can be fetched directly using its `id`, which is an HTTPS URL.
