So, gamedevs, worth noting - the ongoing "Xbox seems to not want to make consoles/exist?/etc" anymore fallout?

So, gamedevs, worth noting - the ongoing "Xbox seems to not want to make consoles/exist?/etc" anymore fallout? Paired with SteamDeck vying with Switch, mobile being irrelevant, etc
Look at what that means wrt the engine you're using
Do you still ACTUALLY care about being able to port everywhere?

@glassbottommeg I try to keep my options open when making technical decisions about my side projects, and so while I don't make choices that wall off console ports or put unnecessary obstacles in front of them, I've realized that any game projects I might pursue are going to be so long term it doesn't make sense to consider today's consoles as porting targets. SteamDeck, Windows, and maybe Linux are the only platforms I'm planning on targeting right now for my current independent projects.

@glassbottommeg and the reason for not considering console ports right now is simple and practical: the vast majority of the work on these projects is work I am planning on doing myself, and there's only so much time in the world. I'd like to do console ports, but the projects have to be successful enough to justify the time and money.

@glassbottommeg I imagine if I had an established business and not something that is halfway between a hobby and a side hustle, my answer would probably be different though.

@glassbottommeg I'm also operating on the theory that "games that run well on old hardware but don't have console ports" has a larger potential install base than "games that require contemporary hardware and have console ports", but this is entirely a gut feel and not something I have any data to support.

@aeva @glassbottommeg was going to write a pedantic answer but thought better. now, the point: that's the real question isn't it, for writing for older specs: will all this _potential_ extra units translate into _actual_ extra units, and there i think we come back to the bane of indies? luck and reach?
