Start considering moving your communities out of Discord now. Don’t wait for the enshittiffication to arrive, the clock is ticking. No one will listen to me, but let’s talk again later. https://www.reuters.com/business/chat-platform-discord-confidentially-file-us-ipo-bloomberg-news-reports-2026-01-06/
Unfortunately there isn't really any solid discord alternative.

@djlink Moving out - great. But my main question is - why did anyone move in, in the first place? People have to stop willingly jumping in to these VC-backed sites and then being all surprised-Pikachu when the monopoly they helped to create turns out to punish them in the end. It's not like we haven't had 15 or more years of this.

A lot are asking "ok which alternatives?". Indeed there's nothing quite exactly like Discord and that's the scary part of them going public, they convinced tons of companies to ditch blogs/forums in favor of them. But because there's no exact replacement doesn't mean we should wait and see. Investigate! (some are in comments suggesting stuff) Remember Twitter and others stuff we had to leave when it was too late to slowly build momentum elsewhere. That's what I'm getting at. -

@djlink Discord somehow took over and made into chat what before was pretty much classic forum experiece

Good chance to bring it back. Make communities on forums that lasts, not chats that are temporal

@djlink@mastodon.gamedev.place not like Discord wasn't already making their product worse before this.

@djlink Why is filing confidentially for IPO a thing that is permitted?

That's what I'm getting at.@djlink This isn't an option I'd recommend anymore, but around 2014, Slack was a cool free way of organizing projects. I thought of it as "Mumble but with good text chat". Then later I remember using Discord for the first time, with the impression that Discord plagarized Slack's UI, hahahaha.

@fuopy Slack was cool for a while but my personal opinion is that it hasn't aged well, I have to use it for work and I wish I didn't had to xD

it replaced discord for me. it's missing some functions (and users), but it has high security standards and you can host your own instance. i went back to discord once and… they really want you to pay for gifs and make you watch ai commercials for "orbs" or whatever the quirky name is. i really like that matrix leaves me alone and doesn't try to sell me anything.
