shit, prime put up casino royale for free so we watched it again (eva green is in it!).

moving on to brosnan bond! there are four movies, beginning with GoldenEye (1995). yes, no space between the golden and the eye. it's very computer! sean bean is in this one. it's probably not going to end well for sean bean. because he is sean bean. aaaand he's dead.
judi dench plays M even in this installment, which if you think about it is most odd. are these two parallel bond universes where M remains a constant?
title song by tina turner. great work.
compared to craig's bond, brosnan's bond is an absolute cartoon character. i'll nickname him "pepe le pew pew"
bond's car is from the future. where other cars have a radio, this one has a fax machine.
in this movie, russians are the baddies. simple, time tried, and factually correct.
the, i wanna say, "villainesse" gets sexually aroused by killing people. who hasn't met one of those!
generally, the corny "porn comedy" feel of this movie is palpable. lady sarkeesian help us!

noticing about GoldenEye that it's very much filmed for blurry 4:3 TV conversion. that means packed readable close-ups, no elegant wide panavision shots as they were often common in the 70's, and as a result the general feeling is so pulpy and TV like. quite unbecoming and ugly.
compare this to No Time To Die from 2021 which absolutely banks on the fact that the target format is and will always be 4K widescreen.

back then he meant that in a good way. but now it sounds rather threatening.

moving on to the next one, Tomorrow Never Dies (1997). teri hatcher (lois & clark) is in this one. and jonathan pryce (brazil, game of thrones). and michelle yeoh! i hope that means there will be kung fu.
apparently this time the baddies are... germans? no. just german goons. the guy in charge looks like vanilla ice and h.p. baxxter got into a transporter accident. the real villain is rupert murdock.
while the last one had CRTs, this is the first one with brand new plasma flatscreens.

no kung fu so far. what a bummer. and it's mostly set in hamburg. double bummer. in fact, there is so much talk that i'm thinking they were constrained for budget. this is almost a TV movie. okay it picks up the pace in the second half.
the best thing though is bond's BMW (intense product placement here) talking with a german accent. you read that right, the car speaks!

kickass stunt work in the saigon sequence. definitely worth it for that one. and light traces of kung fu. michelle yeoh still criminally underutilized - ah. i spoke to soon. there it is! kung fu!

now we know who inspired angela merkel's wardrobe. M is for ... merkel.

this evening: The World Is Not Enough (1999). This is the first post-Matrix bond, but you don't notice it much, apart from the orchestra being backed by big beats, which already happens in the previous bond, so it's more 90's specific than Matrix-specific. I'm guessing the movies' production schedules overlapped, so one couldn't influence the other. But the next one is from 2002, where we should see the influence very clearly.

this is the last bond with desmond llewelyn as Q, who has been playing Q since 1963.
this is also the first brosnan bond that isn't a pro-4:3 TV movie mess and features plenty of beautiful wide shots, marking the widespread adoption of 16:9 screens.
Goldie is in this, the d&b artist who was together with björk.
once again, the baddie is russian: true and wholesome. but the script is incredibly sexist. absolutely awful.
but it has big saws mounted to helicopters. now i have seen everything.

ugh they demo a real garotte in this movie. 🤢
robbie coltrane (hagrid in HP) was in two bonds btw: this one and goldeneye.
the big beats have matured to cascading jungle beats. in fact, the soundtrack does most of the work (david arnold).
a millennium bug joke, and roll credits. thank god it's over.

next one! Die Another Day (2002). by the same writers, and has an even lower IMDb score, so I don't expect much. at least it starts with jungle beats right away. and black ops on surfboards. because why not. we are in... north korea?
hale berry (catwoman) and rosamund pike (gone girl) are in this one. hale berry is going to wear a catsuit again. i can feel it. is that the matrix influence already?
checking and catwoman was made later. so this is the first time she would be in a catsuit.

title song sung by madonna. this banger also rocked the charts.
all brosnan bonds use helvetica for their awful awful title sequences by the way, and while helvetica was a classy 70's throwback font back then, it looks really dated here.
we're back in the story. bond was in jail for a long time, and he's donning long hermit hair and a thick unkempt hermit beard. a rare look. i hope he stays that way for the rest of the movie.
after 28 minutes the beard is off. but we get to vacay in havana!

obligatory side by side shot of ursula andress (dr. no, 1962) and hale berry in this one, 40 years later. it's a direct quote. it worked to promote the movie. and now you have seen it (again). that's all there is to say about it.

"london calling" is part of the soundtrack.
some beautiful landscape shots. it's a great scan too. UHD. if only they could upsample bond's greasy comments.
oh madonna even plays a small role here.
hah! a VR simulation with the faintest of bullet time. i knew there would be *something*

ah. finally done. this movie had 300% more plot than it needed to have. too many gimmicks, terrible green screen compositing and not enough real stunts.
this concludes all brosnan bonds. more tomorrow evening.

new evening, new bond: The Living Daylights (1987) with timothy dalton (hot fuzz, doom patrol) as 007.
dalton was originally scheduled for more than two movies but a rights dispute unrelated to him delayed the next bond, and dalton couldn't wait.
the bond score is also spiffed up with beats - but they sound very "smooth criminal", very quincy jones - although it isn't him - it's john barry.
the title song is also very 80's - "The Living Daylights" by A-Ha (take on me).

amazing 80's computering on display. can anyone identify this model?
