shit, prime put up casino royale for free so we watched it again (eva green is in it!).

next one! Die Another Day (2002). by the same writers, and has an even lower IMDb score, so I don't expect much. at least it starts with jungle beats right away. and black ops on surfboards. because why not. we are in... north korea?
hale berry (catwoman) and rosamund pike (gone girl) are in this one. hale berry is going to wear a catsuit again. i can feel it. is that the matrix influence already?
checking and catwoman was made later. so this is the first time she would be in a catsuit.
title song sung by madonna. this banger also rocked the charts.
all brosnan bonds use helvetica for their awful awful title sequences by the way, and while helvetica was a classy 70's throwback font back then, it looks really dated here.
we're back in the story. bond was in jail for a long time, and he's donning long hermit hair and a thick unkempt hermit beard. a rare look. i hope he stays that way for the rest of the movie.
after 28 minutes the beard is off. but we get to vacay in havana!

obligatory side by side shot of ursula andress (dr. no, 1962) and hale berry in this one, 40 years later. it's a direct quote. it worked to promote the movie. and now you have seen it (again). that's all there is to say about it.

"london calling" is part of the soundtrack.
some beautiful landscape shots. it's a great scan too. UHD. if only they could upsample bond's greasy comments.
oh madonna even plays a small role here.
hah! a VR simulation with the faintest of bullet time. i knew there would be *something*

ah. finally done. this movie had 300% more plot than it needed to have. too many gimmicks, terrible green screen compositing and not enough real stunts.
this concludes all brosnan bonds. more tomorrow evening.

new evening, new bond: The Living Daylights (1987) with timothy dalton (hot fuzz, doom patrol) as 007.
dalton was originally scheduled for more than two movies but a rights dispute unrelated to him delayed the next bond, and dalton couldn't wait.
the bond score is also spiffed up with beats - but they sound very "smooth criminal", very quincy jones - although it isn't him - it's john barry.
the title song is also very 80's - "The Living Daylights" by A-Ha (take on me).

love the running gag where Q tells bond to be careful with the car, and a bit later in the movie, the car is utterly wrecked. this has been going on for several movies. even a craig bond movie has it.
so far this movie is an absolute delight. very fun. john-rhys davies (lotr, indiana jones) is in it.
it also features afghanistan, back then under russian control. the mujahideen are called "resistance fighters". how the tables have turned since then.

all done. the next and last dalton bond is License To Kill (1989). same director. both movies have great cinematography by the way.
benicio del toro (fear & loathing in las vegas, usual suspects, sicario) plays a tiny role in this one.
the title track is by gladys knight (midnight train to georgia).
so far the movie can't replicate the charm of its predecessor. its a lot more serious and suspenseful, and as a result, more boring - but picks up in humor in the last third.

this movie has sound fx easter eggs! two that we've found:
1. during a chase, gangsters machinegun the underside of a gasoline truck to get at bond hanging from it. the ricochet *pings* play the bond theme.
2. when bond descends from a house and briefly grabs the stone breast of a feminine facade sculpture, you can hear a car honking somewhere off-screen.

alright. that's dalton, who said he played his second bond a bit grittier to do justice to the bond in the novels. that means craig was the realest bond of them all i guess?
which actor to continue with next? here's where it gets complicated: in reverse order, we'd watch moore, then connery, then 2 others, then connery again - instead we will watch in the reverse order of when the actors were first introduced (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portrayal_of_James_Bond_in_film), but in forward order within each actor's anthology.

so the next one is the very first 007 with roger moore, Live and Let Die (1973), and immediately you can hear the excellent title track in your head, can't you? it's performed by US-british rock band Wings and was written by paul and linda mccartney (the police).
immediately i can tell, this is going to be good. more black actors in one scene than i have seen in all movies so far combined. yaphet kotto (running man, midnight run) gets head billing - he plays the villain.

they employed a lot of black actors in this film. all they had to do was to play the baddies. it's a bit of a schindler's list kind of a situation: you can give tons of disprivileged people work - on the condition that they make ammunition for their oppressor. i hope they got paid well. def'tly good for exposure.
but it's clear who the movie sides with politically/spiritually, and it's not the "cracker honkey". it reminds me of jack nicholson getting consistently better lines in Batman (1989).

this movie is turning me into a racist. knock at bonds hotel room door. it's a black waiter. "your champagner sir!". i'm thinking: bet he's part of the gang
fortunately bond's side is not all pale.
the villain gets all his intel from a tarot reader. she is never wrong. they are magic people, voodoo people.
jane seymour (dr. quinn, BSG) is in this.

this movie is either sheer genius or an utter catastrophy, but definitely nothing in between. it is no doubt incredibly creative.
bond gets the rare opportunity of listening to a diegetic rendition of his movie's title song.

i'm not going to spoil more of the movie, it is an absolute masterpiece. cult worthy.
the first one so far where i was sad the 2 hours were over already.
wikipedia: "Salvador Dalí was approached in 1973 to design a Surrealist tarot deck for the film. However, his fee was too expensive for the film budget. Dalí kept working at the deck and released it in 1984."
