Like, Apple has been abusing devs for so long now. They're literally the guys who invented the walled garden in computing. And *now* they're the bad guys cause they added GUI flair you don't like? Please be more serious than this

@eniko I mean, there are multiple axes of bad. I don't think it's an incoherent position to say "I tolerated Apple being a locked down platform for the sake of a better user experience, but now I'm pissed because they've wrecked the user experience"

@eniko Probably in the old days, Apple respected consent a little more than Microsoft and Google, but Apple also sells expensive hardware, while Microsoft and Google always need other revenue streams more desperately.

Aside: I've seen kids who change iPhone whenever a new model is released. Apple consistently frames its products as luxury goods to fuel this kind of behaviour.

@eniko I think a lot of people have seen apple as the bad guys "but", and the "but" is what is eroding. Due to a GUI flair.

@eniko other bad thing I remember people not giving a fuck about, was when apple doubled down on not making their devices faceid recognizing non-white people properly (I don't know if they eventually budged and made the thing usable, but I remember their initial position was saying they would not fix it)

@eniko these articles are mostly written for Apple fans, by Apple fans, so there is a shared subtext that may not be obvious to an outsider

There's no need for Apple users to explain to each other the nature of the deal that we thought we were making, and why this feels like a final, unforgivable betrayal of it

I'm under no illusion that Apple hasn't been terrible for years, and getting worse. This is a straw-that-broke-the-camel's-back situation, not a sudden revelation
