I'm just brainstorming here. I actually love the simplicity of @_elena 's idea: Have an option in the notifications view to filter by followers. It's a partial match for 'people that I think more important'.
Is it fully what I originally asked for? no. But it's a strong start and doesn't require any additional user work (other than picking the option)
For Phanpy, a dumb idea is to have "only Followers" under the "only Mentions" checkbox in the notifications view. It's clunky, and I think there is a better way to do it but I'm "kicking the can down the road" to give you idea of how Elena's idea could be shown. If there is a better approach, please suggest.

Change "Mentions - ALL / PRIVATE" to "Mentions - ALL / FOLLOWING / PRIVATE" so you can filter the view to only see mentions from people who you are following?
That seems a sensible plan for those who get a ton of notifications?

@james @cheeaun @scottjenson @moira yes precisely what I meant, thanks… if there was a way to filter mentions with a dedicated tab for replies by people you follow, it would help when popular accounts get 200+ mentions in a day

@_elena @cheeaun @scottjenson @moira I *think* that is what Twitter used to offer verified users. (I was one, but Elon took it away.)

@scottjenson @_elena @cheeaun okay so i think i'm confused here, because, well, in web view, it's like... this sounds like what you want? you can filter by people you follow and/or people who follow you, separately, and those go to the filtered notifications inbox.
or do you mean filter by _number_ of followers? because that's definitely not a thing.
(is this not supported in the mobile app yet? maybe it's something you have to set up via webview?)

Yes I found that but my understanding is that it's a setting so all notifications follow this pattern. I'll looking for something more dynamic, e.g. most of this time I view all notifications but when things get a bit crazy I can turn this filter on to cope with the chaos

@scottjenson @moira @cheeaun filtered notifications require extra clicks and are hidden behind a tab… I missed important messages during FOSDEM because they ended up in « filtered notifications » … which are completely hidden in Ivory on iOS.
I was proposing something closer to Twitter 1.0 (RIP) where mentions are split in two tabs: ALL mentions and Following (aka mentions from accounts you follow)

@ticho @_elena, you could have opened your browser's dev tools (with F12), and hack into the page to "delete" the backups by deleting the nodes (they are all in `<a ...>...</a>` tags). That way, you only give the impression there is no backup, but a simple page refresh would make them reappear. 😉

and I don't have a welder, nor can use it (yet)
I suspect that the clothes iron isn't that much of a load either, at least once it's up to temperature, because it's rated 2.2 kW or something, but it's also on for very short periods of time, I should take some actual measurement
the same applies to the kettle: rated 2.2 kW, but for a tea it only stays on for a couple of minutes, so it's less than 100 Wh
