@aadeacon Exactly. Humans in our timeline *needed* mechanisms to ignite things. In an alternate timeline, (half of) humans can make all the sparks they want without any tools or materials. Why *bother* with semi-reliable flintlocks or matchlocks? What's even the motivation?

#WritersCoffeeClub – 15 Jan. How human are your protagonists? What about your antagonists?Current WIP(s) are set 700,000 years in our future (it's wide-scale space opera). Our species of hominin is long extinct and our planet forgotten, but its existence is inferred from cladistic studies—humanity speciated after it went interstellar. There's a "Translator's Note" at the beginning—see screencap—that tries to clarify things. (Note that it's as much a work of fiction as the rest of the novel.)

#WritersCoffeeClub Dec 26 Who or what serves as your "rubber duck"?Friends. I get all my best flashes of insight when telling friends about my current work in progress over a coffee or a beer.(I suspect the act of explaining forces me to linearize my chain of reasoning, which exposes weak links: and the audience asks questions or cues me by indicating what they're paying attention to, which uncovers other stuff.)NB: I have the ASD thing of missing conversational pass-the-parcel cues.

#WritersCoffeeClub Footnote: "Destiny" tends to show up more in fantasy than SF. On my to-do list is a hard-SF Chosen One narrative—our protag knows from an early age they're not like the other kids in the hive. Only as they near adulthood do they learn that they're a member of a rival eusocial hominin subspecies, and they've been created to infiltrate a neighbouring hive and kill and replace the queen ...
