This is nonsense. The idea that you need a photo ID to buy beer so it's just common sense that you need one to vote is premised on a world where (a) every liquor store has a list of all eligible drinkers that they check off when you buy a beer and...

...(b) that the % of non-citizens voting is a fraction of a percent of the % of underage people buying beer. Neither of those things are remotely true. Barrasso - like all Republicans - don't want citizens to vote who don't vote for them because their ideas aren't popular.

I'd respect him more if he just said "I don't want women or minorities or young people to vote". At least then he'd be honest about his intentions. But making up bad analogies doesn't make you a statesman. It makes you a liar.

@SeanCasten tbf, he kinda said that. "They want to cheat" is their dog whistle for it.
Also this is a poll tax unless they simultaneously start giving ID's out for free.

@SeanCasten Except that they don't accept photo ID for the #SAVEAct, not even #REALID, which is good enough to fly.

@SeanCasten The only way to make required ID for voting fair would be if in the same act they also made applying for any kind of government ID free and convenient. But even then, it'd still be an unnecessary bit of legislative chicanery.

@Legit_Spaghetti @SeanCasten It’s also addressing a non issue. The only headlines of folk having been caught illegally voting that have made it north have been Republicans plus a Black woman released from jail who didn’t know she shouldn’t vote (which most of us in the rest of the world thought reasonable).

@SeanCasten Dude, you're a congressman and should set a good example and use alt-text. You might have constituents who need it.

@CordiallyChloe @SeanCasten The UK does that. They'll even help you take the photo!
"You’ll be asked for:
a digital photo of yourself ...
your National Insurance number
You can still apply if you do not have a National Insurance number. You’ll need to provide other documents to prove your identity, for example a birth certificate, bank statement and utility bill.
If you need help taking a photo, contact your electoral registration office."

Well, the US doesn't. And ID is handled by each individual state, so they'd have to pass state level laws...51 of them... to make it free. And they won't.

@SeanCasten Buying beer is not a constitutional right. But It's also a states rights thing, just like voting. Also, it is not the principle of showing an ID, it is which ID's will be allowed. I can envision a future where only an official MAGA ID will be allowed for voting.

@SeanCasten and how many underage people acquire fake IDs to purchase their booze? If you can't overcome the potential for the use of fake IDs, you're no better off.

"Chad Pergram
@ChadPergramBarrasso on Fox: I support the Save America Act. It's just common sense. You want to make sure that only citizens can vote. You want to make sure that when people show up, they have a photo ID to prove they are who they say they are. You need a you need a photo ID to buy a beer, to board a plane, all of those things. And it's 90% popular with the American people. [...]"
