BlueSky, the fully decentralised (wink wink) social media platform is down worldwide again.

@bbaugh @GossiTheDog Yeah it's a couple of PDSes.
@mttaggart @bbaugh @GossiTheDog Why would you ruin a good toot with facts…
-
@GossiTheDog It's strange that a decentralised platform can go down globally 🫠
@hcj @GossiTheDog Yes, it would be, if that was what happened, but it's not what happened

It's down everywhere, how much more decentralized do you want???

is it wrong to giggle 🤣

but of course we are allowed to remain disgusted by bluesky's level of centralization

@benroyce @hcj @GossiTheDog I will allow that 😉

@GossiTheDog apparently, from the post on my timeline immediately before this, so is facebook
something is afoot

@GossiTheDog I love BlueSky. Much better than Xitter. I hope it stays on... Even though the Ai data centers ruining everything. I can't stand with the idea of going back to Xitter.

@GossiTheDog Oracle appears to be the culprit, so the beginning of the collapse has started.

@GossiTheDog i should run an uptime kuma on major sites for lols. I miss all these outages by not being on them.

@blaurascon @GossiTheDog Internet connections were fluttering and inconsistent all day today in the Pacific NW. Both at my home office and work buildings. Probably unrelated but hmm.

Today, all #Bluesky posts go through a central server, even if you self‑host.
Bluesky began as a Twitter research project. If Bluesky were still considered part of Twitter, no one would trust it, so they made it a separate company.

@Earl @GossiTheDog And they used a lot of money from very very questionable people to do it.
Those people will want a return on their investment. As in user data/manipulation/etc. Presumably this was already planned from the start and it's just a matter of getting people dependent on it first before putting it in (or at least before making it too obvious.)
In other words, the thing designed to be not-X will be X soon. By design from the start.

@keremgoart @GossiTheDog Bad news. Bluesky is X 2.0. It's just a matter of getting people like you dependent enough on it first before bringing out all the manipulation and data sales into the open. I'm sure they already do some even now.
Essentially those who left X for Bluesky left one thing for something designed to be the exact same thing.

@GossiTheDog ...in a decentralized manner.
-
@GossiTheDog No, a couple of Bluesky-hosted PDSes are down, the remaining ~90 of theirs and all the independent ones are fine. You know, because it's decentralized.
Kuba, this post might be misinterpreted by some to suggest that there are no centralized components in the Bluesky/ATProto platform architecture. While, as you say, the PDSs are distributed they share common services that are points of centralization, so it is not really accurate to say Bluesky is decentralized. Also, with something like 99% of users on Bluesky PBC run hardware, it is really misleading to call the network decentralized.

@blaurascon @GossiTheDog reddit was also experiencing problems around the same time. I suspect maybe some backbone problems rather than a single service
