@benroyce @alienghic @lauren I used that comic at the beginning of my talks on energy democracy 15yrs ago. The ubiquitous nature of renewable energies argues for a decentralized energy approach, to paraphrase John Farrell of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance. For the first time in human history individuals & communities are able to generate power & store energy. Kings, lords, & now capitalists, really really don't like that. But the political will to democratize energy does not exist. 😞

People should just have their own solar/ wind farms
Doesn't work in cities but does in the countryside. There's a steep upfront cost though, despite longterm payoff, and that's where everyone is stuck

@alienghic @lauren The truth rather is "All means of production for solar panels are owned by China"

That's because China is a major industrial power that doesn't have large fossil fuel reserves. It is to their benefit to reduce the amount of oil they import so they invested in renewable energy.
The republican party is tied to the oil industry so whenever they're in power we dump support for renewable energy.
However solar panels last even longer than expected. Panels installed in the 1980s are still outputting 80% of their original spec.

Its not super important who makes it if you don't need to replace it

@benroyce it does work in cities, though. Every new school or apartment building can have a big bank of panels on the roof. The Albina Vision Project in Portland https://albinavision.org/ has plans to be an energy exporter, so its residents and business owners will have zero energy bills. It's happening.
